I mean, I've heard David Byrne stuff, but that's not the real thing I'm talking about. I'm looking for percussion-driven, a study in rhythm if you will. Any genre will do, can you help me? Sorry for stupid pic
bumping cuz interested
Babatunde Olatunji - Drums of Passion
Art Blakey - Orgy in Rhythm
Fela Kuti - Zombie
Also bumping, this is definitely something I'm interested in learning more about.

In general, you just have to explore comps and afrobeat to really get into it. Analog Africa, Awesome Tapes from Africa, and those "Rough Guide to.." labels are all solid, pretty popular comps, but there's also stuff out there from labels like Nonesuch that did "Ghana Highlife" which compiles all kinds of goodies.
Afrobeat begins with Tony Allen's drumming and Fela Kuti's leadership. Loads of other afrobeat artists thouhh that are easy enough to find if you dig around
