I also wondered this a few times. Brian Wilson was, obviously, their leading and actually only creative force, but after having that breakdown while making Smile, he never recovered and became completely sane again. With your leading creative force gone, you have nothing left songwriting-wise. Still, Sunflower, Surf's Up and Holland are all very decent albums.
