>>
>>75015252
the Germans started with the industrial shit but the Americans ate that shit up (like they do with most things) and spat it out on to goth subculture. thus even more ate it up and ruined the scene for anyone who wasn't a massive faggot. Not to say that goths aren't fags.
>>
>>75015268
So the Germans just followed suit with their weird "metal, industrial, goth and paganism are now all the same" culture?

>>
>>75015299
I've never seen an industrial/experimental/ebm/power electronics/synthpop/neofolk band claim they were goth or actively champion the culture before the 00s and "cybergoth". Even now it's still rare.
>>
Come to think of it, same with steampunk, it's apparently a goth genre now because... WGT?
>>
>>75015325
If goths didn't try to incorporate different types of music to their scene, then the music aspect of it would have died out.
>>
Finnish goth thing about a child being trapped in a house of mirrors
https://youtu.be/ORn1ZZSyn8Q
>>
>>75015325
Because there was no need to.
You could start out as a goth rock band and then do some power electronics on the side or start out as a percussive industrial band and then go new wave or vice-versa and you could do neofolk and then recruit a singer who's associated with the goth scene.

The goth subculture was still fresh and there was already crossbreeding and genre shifting.

Goth, like autism, is a spectrum. With plenty of dimensions.
>>
>>75015343
steampunk isn't music, it's a cosplay trend
>>
>>75015351
:DDDD
>>
>>75015325
Well Robert Smith called NIN and Marilyn Manson "goth bands" in the 90s even though they themselves only began acknowledging their goth influences in the 2000s.

So clearly people didn't wait for cybergoths to start assimilating the industrial and goth scenes

at the end of the day it's all just spooky post-punk, doesn't matter if it's played with guitars, synths, or trashcans.
>>
>>75015309

>>
>>75015413

>>
>>75015349
Would it tho? Cause right now it seems like actually admitting you're a goth leads to career suicide. Ice seen plenty of bands shift from the label or try to avoid it like the plague...

>>75015368
But EBM and goth were two very different subcultures at the beginning, and most bands didn't really shift their sound anywhere beyond what they were doing.

>>75015377
Yes, and apparently it's goth now, just like showing up in Victorian cosplay is somehow goth.

>>75015403
But what about the stuff that isn't spooky or post-punk and still labeled goth? All the experimental, noise, power electronics, ""dark"" breakcore... It just seems like everyone is showing bands there left and right with no reason.

>>75015423
It's not the artists themselves who are toting around the goth moniker, it's the fans calling them goth. I imagine most newer artists wouldn't want to label themselves because it boxes them in and lowers their appeal to others.
>>
>>75015423
>But EBM and goth were two very different subcultures at the beginning, and most bands didn't really shift their sound anywhere beyond what they were doing.
uh not really, they're both just spooky offshoots of New Wave. There's certainly a strain of EBM that's a lot more macho militaristic and whatnot but beside it, there's EBM like Bigod 20 that's closer to darkwave.
The line is pretty blurry and when you take into account the fact that hard trance was partially inspired by EBM, the whole electro-industrial harsh EBM aggrotech scene of the 2000s really isn't the abomination it's made up to be, it's clearly the result of trends that were already beginning 20 years before that.

Now as for specifically techno-derived genres that label themselves as "goth" like darkstep and dark breakcore and shit, it's clearly a case of normies trying to retroactively market their shit as a product of a subculture they don't actually know

as for power electronics, as I said it's just something that some early goth rock bands also happened to be into, so both scenes kind of ended up cohabitating even though the music itself is very different
>>
>>75015436
ruffle ruffle
>>
>>75015483
That's the problem, people just decided what's goth enough and what isn't completely at random. Why is Synapscape OK but Aphex Twin isn't? Etc etc

>>75015510
The sound may have been different, but the subculture was one. Old school EBM subculture wasn't goth and didn't really try to appeal to goths, you can still see it at places like Familientreffen or something. Even today, if you go to a Nitzer Ebb concert, youll see two completely different camps there.

And clicking your fingers for a gothic twilight
That actually existed just in your head
Your fingernails painted black
Or bloodred
I forget

And your fake-leather volumes
Jabbering on hell
Manifest decadence was what you hoped to exhail
Your eyes tried so hard to glitter

A star-snuffing black
So you opened your books
And you opened your legs
And so opened your heart
And let in the badness
You claimed
As your friend
With un-angels hovering
Like flies round the orchard
That had covered your soul
Their empire increasing
And your country
Deserted by yourself

The bells of St. Mary call us to remember
That life is with end
And the gestures can kill us
Moreover destroy
And there is one jugdement only

Your letters came daily
In French or in German
But they meant to me nothing
I caught the slow cords
And dry ice fogging your mind
I see all too clearly now
Why you could be discarded
And though I could pray for you
I probably shan't
Having had my cup filled up
With your lies
And your makeup
You were nothing
Thinking you're something

And nonetheless I still write this gothic lovesong
A sign to myself
And the memory of my past
I still write this gothic lovesong
A sign to myself
And the memory of my past
And a way to shut out your face

I listened to one of their albums and if it wasn't for the vocals I would have LOVED it

I can't stand that guy's voice. He's trying SO hard to be cool sounding and dramatic, but he sounds like a parody of himself

did they ever do anything instrumental? or is there anything like it that is instrumental?
