Your band added this song to the setlist and you have to improvise over the solo part and keep track of the breaks and end it on the right bar. How you do it?

>>
>>75003388
From 2:30 to 3:44. Besides the breaks, theres also the rhythm section's variations you have to keep track of so you interact with them and sound interesting.

They're noiseless single coils. The coils are split in two so that the two sides cancel out the single coil hum. Pretty neat.
>>
>>75003728

Visual wankery. Theoretically the parts further towards the bridge will sound brighter/harsher (think neck vs bridge pickup). But mostly visual wankery.

I need help. I want to buy an electric guitar. 6 string desu.

Am I better off buying some vintage shit for $400 made in Japan or some new-age chink shit for $600?

What would be a good beginner guitar? I really like the look of the Gibson models, the LP, but it's fucking expensive and seems like overkill.
>>
>>75005045
You can get quality with that price but you need to some research first by yourself as nobody can tell you what is good. From top of my head I would recommend getting Ibanez hardtail (hardtail = fixed bridge instead of floating bridge / floyd rose). Ibanez has lot of good models. Sometimes putting in extra 100$ will help a lot. Just make sure you have fixed bridge and good humbucker bridge pickup.
>>
>>75005132
https://www.andertons.co.uk/p/RG421EX-BKF/solid-body-electric-guitars/ibanez-rg421ex-in-black-flat
For example, I would buy this in instant.
>>
>>75005132
I had a look at these 2, but don't know what the fuck I'm looking at.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/192296669589

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Excellent-1975-Greco-Japan-EG550R-Cherry-Sunburst-electric-guitar-RefNo-451/192293718667?_trksid=p2485497.m4902.l9144

They seem nice, I like the style and color of each, but just don't know anything about either 1. I just know with most things, a lot of vintage shit is far better value than new from my experience.

Thanks for the reply, I'll look into that one as well.
>>
>>75004713
Why is this meme still around?
>>
>>75005183
You are buying your first guitar, you are not buying an art asset. What you need as a beginner is: a) playability, b) enough quality so the guitar stays in tune, c) something which is good enough for you to last couple of years IF you actually practice enough to learn to play and keep it as a hobby. Beginner guitar should be also good enough to inspire you to keep playing, so sound wise it can't sound like total shit.

Getting "vintage" this or that is just shit and doesn't help you. Guitar is a tool.
>>
>>75005237
Right, yeah, all good points. I guess the only thing that attracts me to the vintage style would be value/$, I just know a lot of older shit is well built. I just don't know how much this matters with instruments, but I keep reading how people will swear by older instruments and see no reason to buy from Gibson shit for $3K or however much they cost.
>>
>>75005183
https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/reviews
Just read some reviews and also read some articles. This is pretty good resource. Also check the forums to make yourself familiar with stuff.
>>
>>75005280
This doesn't apply to you. You are complete beginner. Vintage instruments are expensive and out of your reach, they are not for beginners. They are for people who actually know how to play or for dads who are re-living their youth.

If you insist getting a "vintage" guitar from ebay and find out it's total shit, i.e. the headstock could have been replaced, the electronics could need to be replaced or neck might have issues because of old age (i.e. it's not straight). There's ton of stuff what you need to know when buying used guitar. This is why it is safer to go to Guitar Center and have few models in mind which you have already researched well engouh. Then you will try these models and decide which to buy. Better yet, take along a friend who is a player.
>>
>>75005333
>>75005381
Thanks a lot, you guys definitely just saved me some money I think. I just wasn't thinking clearly and got caught up in hype reading shit all day online at work. My uncle is a guitar collector so I think I'll ask him about vintage shit at some point, but for now I'll just look for a beginner guitar of some nature and look at vintage stuff when I got a lot more experience under my belt.

If you have any more advice or recommendations, feel free to share them.

Forgive my ignorance, but I'm an acoustic fag trying to get into electrics.

If I want to be able to play everything from ZZ Top to Metallica decently well, would the Yamaha THR10X be a reasonable amp? Or will it just be a ridiculous amount of gain?
>>
>>75005555
It's better to buy new guitar for your first in my opinion. One thing also with used, old guitars is that being that old the frets might need to be redone. My friend had old fender from 70s when I was younger, it was some kind of family jewel. However the frets were so worn out it was impossible to play it properly and he never practiced anyway. I don't know what happened to that guitar.

There's just lot of stuff you need to know first and preferably see the used guitar in person before spending any money even if it's cheap. Or more likely, if it's cheap then there's probably something wrong with it in the first place. But just take your time and research more, talk to your Uncle. Even if it's just few hundred money it sucks if you waste it etc.
>>
>>75005589
Tastes change. My second guitar when I was 15 had a black gloss finish and a rosewood fretboard. At the time I thought it was sick, now those are two of my least favorite things
>>
Everyone arguing about finishes: the answer is simple.

All sunburst, all the time.
>>
>>75005676
You can always turn gain down as well as guitar volume down (the volume knob on guitar). So "ridiculous amounts of gain" doesn't matter--just turn it down until you dial in your tone
>>
>>75005555
Definitely buy new. Beginners don't know what to look out for on a used guitar. I wouldn't recommend spending more than $400 until you know you like playing and plan to stick with it. So many people buy a guitar and then give up after a week because it's too hard. You can always upgrade later on, and at that point you'll have a better idea of what sound/style you like and what is and isn't comfortable.

Also, it might sound obvious, but get something you really like the look of. You're more likely to be inspired to pick it up and improve if you think you look cool with it in your hands.
>>
>>75005928
Never turn guitar volume down you dumbass.

Master of Puppets was made using mesa/boogie amps and marshall cabinets. Hi gain output is what creates certain sound but it's not really doable for bedroom guitarists unless you want eviction notice.

Technology has evolved however. If you want to get a metal tone just have humbuckers and use amp simulator/computer or whatever. You just need distortion and amp, then tweak the settings to get your sound. Unless you play live with real band of course.

Please forgive the awful-sounding distortion on the guitar solo, i applied distortion to the guitar track after I recorded, and my sound levels are fucked, so please forgive that too

I agree. There are levels of musicianship. And there's a time and place for everything.

I still love Jimi H and Jimmy P. SRV. Carlos Santana. All those cats are good. They introduced me to what I know now.

People like Feodor Dosumov and his band Impact Fuze. Legit guitar and drums and bass.

Then there's Daniel Davidsen's band, Jazzkamikaze. Legit. Everyone is great.

Tosin no solo Abasi is good too. Animals as Leaders.

Tony MacAlpine and his band CAB is FANTASTIC.

This is all jazz fusion for the most part.

Then you have cats like George Benson, Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery, Stanley Jordan, Django.

People like Greg Howe, Jason Becker, Takayoshi Omura.

It goes on.

Don't forget Buckethead. He's the master of guitar. It Does Not get better than that in terms of energy and technique and passion with creativity.

>>
>>75011626
glad to see someone posting about playing. i rarely check these threads out because of the gear shitposting, so it's nice seeing someone sharing their music.

i just watched your video and you've got chops. that said, there wasn't any cohesion between the faster shredder shit and the more melodic parts. don't just shred to show off, make it a part of an overall music idea. start with a melodic idea that starts slow/simple but builds momentum until you're at a point where some fast line actually fits the broader picture.

i compare the rising rhythmic intensity to acceleration for a car or roller coaster, rising/falling in a smooth curve, instead of jumping around haphazardly between fast and slow.

maybe you're already aware of that. i'm just basing my advice on one video. but i hope it helps.
>>
>>75012401
Your dedication is impressive. Imagine if you put that much effort into playing.
>>
>>75011626

As another poster has said, you've got chops. But it sounds like guitar masturbation and not a cohesive musical idea or journey. I'm really not trying to be an ass, but it sounds like you made that video to show off your skills. It would be much more impressive to have a motifs, well thought-out and played phrases, tensions/release, etc... We should be here to play music, not show off.

Additionally, work on your tone and overall sound. Learn how to mute strings so that you don't get these random notes ringing out when they shouldn't, it sounds bad when that happens. Playing is half the battle; tone and sound is the other half. Ever wonder why simple guitar playing and guitar riffs can garner so much attention and praise? They're catchy, well produced and SOUND good.

That said, keep it up. You're not bad but have areas to improve so that should excite and motivate you :)

I have a theory question. For chords like the hendrix chord, when exactly are you able to use it?
>>
>>75014549
i'm just playing my acoustic doing some pseudo-fahey/ragtime noodling and half working on a math problem that's stumped me.

that solo arrangement thing you're doing sounds cool, are you going for something close to the original or your own take?
>>
>>75014576
Hendrix chord is an E7(#9). So, you'll probably use it in situations where a sharpened 2nd (or 9th) can be emphasized. Obviously you can use it in blues but more generally in jazz, fusion and rock. I'd personally learn its different forms and try to insert it in different contexts to see if it works--in other words, just get a feel for it.

>>75014581
Thanks man! Ragtime is pretty chill, it's nice to hear that someone's playing it. I just graduated, so I feel you on that math problem though.

Right now, I'm trying to go for close to the original. Once I have the original down, I can probably add my own little twists here and there. This way I won't deviate too far from the core of the song; at least, that's what I'm thinking.
>>
>>75014576
i assume you mean the "e7(#9)" chord in purple haze and such

it works pretty reliably over most dom 7th chords, and in major blues/funk settings where that shows up. the #9 is basically acting like the b3 of the blues scale in that setting. sometimes it doesn't work though, especially if the natural 9 is prominent.

traditionally it's been used in jazz like other altered chords for some dissonance. you can use it as a substitute for a normal dominant chord there, and the half/whole and altered scales play nice with it.
>>
>>75014581

Also, forgot to ask: got any examples of stuff your working on? Doesn't have to be from you, just something to listen to that's close enough.

>>75014641

Good explanation.
>>
>>75014641
i should say, i'm talking generally about all 7(#9) chords, don't try to just play e7(#9) over everything.

>>
>>75014646
as far as the acoustic/ragtime stuff, definitely listen to john fahey, blind blake, ry cooder (his acoustic stuff, at least), merle teavis. there's a good book called the art of ragtime guitar that's easy to find a pdf online that approachable but challenging. the basic style is pretty straightforward, but it's basically expected to throw in tricky counterpoint and rhythmic ideas to change it up and fuck your day up trying to learn it.
>>
>>75014658
let your teacher know you want long term things to work on and get all your practice material and info written down for future reference. they should change their approach instead of what they'd do if you were planning regular long term lessons.

Yeah, they don't sound as big as dreads, but the sound is specific, very mellow. And they look nice. Problem is when you're recording, you'll need an equalizer because the high notes tend to ring out; I don't know if thicker strings help, I'm afraid of putting anything thicker than 0.11 on mine.

The piano is a perfect visual representation of intervals. Most instruments aren't. If you understand the piano keyboard you're well on the way to understanding music theory.

Ace worked hard as a musician, joining as many bands as his schedule could accommodate just to make money and be seen in the New York music scene. He dropped out of high school just shy of earning a diploma, but his girlfriend talked him into going back and finishing his education. He proudly boasts that he has an IQ of 163.

While Ace worked daily at his craft, sometimes playing two gigs in one night just to make extra money, he wasn’t getting anywhere and was still living at home with his parents who did not share his dreams of rock stardom. That would change when he saw an advertisement in the Village Voice.

Kiss are hacks who cant tune their instruments

>He proudly boasts that he has an IQ of 163.

This is almost certainly bs. Ace would never have subjected himself to an IQ test by a psychologist which is the only way an IQ 4 sds above the mean would be even slightly reliable.

the 4 kiss members did it when they had nothing to do during a tour

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/an-oral-history-of-kiss-destroyer-its-a-miracle-were-alive-20160315

> We were basically a garage band. We were just knuckleheads, guys who turn it up to 11 just because we can. We didn't know anything. We could barely tune our guitars. Before Destroyer, we just did what we did: We played, we wrote songs up to the level of our musicianship, and that was about it.

tbqh that makes me like Kiss even more now.

If he went to a psychologist and phrased it that way he obviously isn't as smart as he claims
