Try to make your way backwards. That was my introduction to jazz in general, and I liked it very much. But listening to old ones made me realize there are betters albums out there, but still think is pretty good. Anyway, listen to Coltrane's A Love Supreme, Sonny Sharrock's Black Woman, Pharoah Sanders's Izipho Zam, Sun Ra, etc
The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady is the obvious pick, but after that diving into Mingus' discography just in general rather than only that album might help. Mingus Ah Um is one I've found most people quite like.
