If you follow the lineage it's not that far off from the the Norwegian ideal of black metal at all. Norwegian BM placed BM in terms of a cosmic, non-anthropomorphic vision i.e. eternal nature vs. ephemeral man. Earlier krautrock/kosmische musik operated on a similar mode of thought. Conrad Schnitzler connected the two scenes by having that feature on Deathcrush (meaning the Norwegian scene would've been on some level conscious of the German progressive electronic stuff), so it's not a stretch for Varg (and the other Norwegians with their ambient side projects) to tinker with ambient and place it in terms of their conception of black metal.

The ambient side projects of Ildjarn, Beherit, Darkthrone etc. didn't come ex nihilo.

So I finally got to listening to Manowar to check them off the backlog. Frankly, some of it is actually pretty damn good as far as trad goes. The real problem is, it's very uneven. Outside of the singles, it's on the level of Running Wild filler or mediocre Kiss/Priest/Dio worship. Good production is a meme and doesn't hide mediocre songs.

The problem for me is not the presence of ambient, but the lack of metal. Cross metal with anything you want, as long as it's still metal and you do it good.
20 minute synth track may be good to some, but it's not metal at all. The exception might be the overall mood (whatever it means), yet metal isn't defined by mood alone. It doesn't merge metal and ambient (like 2nd wave BM did), it sacrifices most features of metal to make way for ambient.

I already clarified that what annoys me is the absence of metal per se. Implying that Varg "shrugged off" the "dead forms of metal" to go to some "pure ideal" is literally the logic behind XXth century garbage art, hence Pollock reference.
The question is, did you really have to destroy the years of evolution and tradition of music to get one synth loop, not realizing you fell into the old Derrida trap? I say that is not only pseudo-intellectual, but suicidal to metal music as a whole. To preface, I'm not discussing Burzum qua Varg's politics but Burzum qua black metal. Yours is an interesting position in terms of a sense of traditionalism considering it's contradistinct to how DMU interprets Burzum and the general Norwegian project of BM (going so far as to use terms like "ambient metal") because they relate it to the larger musical lineage of the aforementioned kosmische musik and the general cultural zeitgeist of the late 80s/early 90s. And DMU's stance on metal traditionalism should be self-evident.

So I just don't see an implication of "shrugging off" "dead forms" here, but an extension of what the Norwegians were getting at (when I reference the Norwegians as a whole it's because it wasn't just Varg that was approaching bm this way). And again, It also has not at all stopped non-Scandinavian or first-wave bm from continuing to be released. The fact that some cascadian band exists does not negate the existence of nwn, ibp, hhr etc. catalogs from existing. The charge of "suicide to metal music" has absolutely no substance.

It is pretty much built on the similar modernist premise though. No music expert but this is from what I listened to and read. Basically "abandon" or "deconstruct" Western music, all synonymous with "destroy".

As I see it, Varg didn't quite take metal to the new horizon. He simply threw out everything that didn't fit to make way for ambient. This is kinda like throwing out the engine out of the car to make it lighter for the horse to carry.
If he managed to take the riffs, melody, etc etc intact, THEN somehow make them hypnotic and ambient, then I'd applaud the man wholeheartedly. THEN he'd extending—not wrecking—BM.

This is indeed very good. I'm only mad that Filosofem is seen by many as a touchstone, something that _irreversibly_ changed BM and became the only direction for "progress", and which became the definining trendsetter of the genre. This scares me quite a lot for reasons I've specified.

This is the exact point of the metal tracks on Hvis and Filosofem though, this is the reason why he refers to those songs as "spells". Darkthrone does the same thing with the droning minimalism on Transylvanian Hunger. Ildjarn does the same thing with the punk-informed minimalism on Forest Poetry. Hence those recordings go a way in explaining the Norwegian conception of black metal and 2nd wave itself.

People will interpret it Filosofem or any record how they will in terms of legacy. I say just let the music do the talking instead of being caught up in interpretations of interpretations. And objectively it's not like there's any shortage of modern non-Norwegian black metal so.... being scared that an underground subculture will go under because some tourists have their own input is unfounded in mostly all respects.

Wouldn't say this, not about rock and especially not about metal, which embraced classical and folk music more. Even in satanism and evil melodies, it's still Western developments. A lot of more melodic BM (and some DM, btw) embraced classic and folk music which I appreciate.
Varg otherwise makes it as abstract, ambient, primitive and hypnotic as possible, which has been the development of the late XIX and XXth century modernism.
…And then he goes and preaches about lost culture, traditions and 'the country we lost'. When his music is deliberately empty of all of that. Go figure.

But it's far from the same. Darkthrone has riffs, melody etc. They are minimalist in the sense "there's nothing to take out to make it better". I think they did a similar thing but much better than Varg, i.e. they truly extended 1st wave while being very careful with the roots of it. You can feel a definite connection between them and NWOBHM that they don't cut but rather preserve.
This is key, they preserve the tradition of metal and Western music in general. Rather than primitivism or something along these lines, they have "good" minimalism which is not exactly at odds with Western culture (see country, folk etc).

Again, I'm scared of the influence and reach his input has had, and the overall signal it sends music-wise. And the circlejerk surrounding this album and music influenced by it.
