Can this actually substitute face-to-face lessons?

I have a 5-string bass and am a total novice.

Maybe, I don't know. Online lessons do the trick as much as face-to-face ones do as well desu, if not better because you can go at your own time.

one of my friends learned guitar completely using rocksmith. He ended up having really bad habits that made it hard for him to make that step to a "good" player. I'd say rocksmith is a good way to keep yourself playing but only using it isn't good

I'm afraid that I'll develop bad habits and the lack of someone being physically present means they won't be nipped in the bud.

If you practice on your own and use tutorials online it may be a fine substitute but don't depend on it

supplement it with online lessons. something you can watch and emulate.

what are some bad habits he developed?
>>
I think it can be a useful practice tool, but a good teacher can help you avoid bad habits and explain the concepts behind a part or style, in a way that self teaching and programs can't provide.

Not at all. It's a fun game but it's not going to teach you how to actually be a musician.

The game tries to teach string muting in the most basic manner but doesn't really touch on it enough and the actual technique used so for songs that required string muting, he just couldnt do it. He also had trouble with learning proper rhythm
