what are some albums released before 1949
How could there be albums when the vinyl LP didn't even exist until the early 50s? Back then, an "album" consisted of a binder with several 78 discs in it.

48 is when the LP format originated, but it wasn't until 52 that Columbia popularised the LP format and other bigger labels started to follow suit before it eventually became the norm. I don't think there was a lot out there until around 52-53 ish but I could be wrong.
The first LPs were 10", the 12" disc was quickly phased in and 10" discs had completely disappeared by 1955.
However, popular music relied on the singles format until 1965-66; albums were only for jazz/classical/traditional pop recordings meant to be played on expensive stereo systems. Popular music albums pre-1965 were just a hit single surrounded by filler and shitty covers.

AFAIK the 12" disc was always there from the beginning but it was supposed to be for classical and jazz while popular music would use the 10" discs. I guess someone quickly started wondering why they had two redundant LP types.
78 discs were gradually phased out during the 50s, but remained in production in the US until the end of the decade, mostly for poorfags who didn't have a modern turntable. 78 discs of Elvis and other rock and roll artists are rare and very collectible.
