It's a shame not many composers are really that interested in writing music for wind band and not that many people are interested in playing it outside of high school band programs. There's a lot of interesting stuff I feel that could be done in that space.

I'm shocked that no one is out there sampling wind band music. There is some really deep shit out there with fat ass chords and melodies.

It's just kind of unknown, people think wind band and think of school band programs and marching band programs and not of Grainger and shit. Just such an unknown to so many people.

it's sad that even fucking amazing composers can't earn a living via composing for wind band alone. almost all of them have to teach college bands just to keep the lights on.

eh, I think John Mackey as an example is doing all right as a composer of wind band, and there are others who are doing fine composing for wind band mostly. But there's definitely a sense that winds get the scraps of other classical music, which is already sort of becoming less lucrative as is.

I mean there are a handful of people who probably make bank on their own... Mackey, R.W. Smith, Holsinger, Hazo... but there is almost zero market for recordings or commercial use. Just hope high school bands are willing to pony up $150 for your next opus. It's a tough life.
