Just got this baby for $500 in great condition.
>>
>>74923656
How did you find it?
>>
>>74924158
Craigslist, the prices have been going down a lot lately, but not by this much. The guy just really needed some cash and I got lucky.

needs more than 2 chords

I came here a few weeks ago asking about MIDI controllers. I don't really play any instruments but was deciding on one to get started.
First i was considering the Behringer UMA25s but now i'm on the verge of pulling the trigger on an Arturia Minilab.
Can someone redpill me on this one?
>>
>>74924302
i have it but I just use it to trigger a granular synth vst, its not very good spend more money
>>
>>74924302
A midi controller is a midi controller. You just need some keys, you won't end up assigning anything to the knobs 90% of the time. Just get anything.
>>
>>74924520
thats just your experience. lots of people, myself included, cant get enough knobs & dials
>>
>>74924471

Some lo-fi house for you guys.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83aV_0tlJqw&feature=youtu.be
>>
>>74924302
I had it.
Pads are unresponsive, so are knobs. The vsts that come included in it are mediocre, even if it claims to be top notch Arturia stuff.
You're better with saving up some money and buying Korg nano control + korg nanokey combo. Trust me.
Also, it depends a lot on the DAW you use. For Live, just save up for a Push 1, super cheap now that Push 2 has been a while on the market.
>>
dont know if i should quit pursuing music. wasted 10 years doing ti no one really cares and my dreams are long gone.
im considering selling everything and keeping a midi keyboard and amp for when i feel like fucking around.
i made some success on selling loops and shit. but in general im not known as a musician in town and all the girls looks the other way if you dont play the guitar.

heres a tip of advice tho:
>pursue music if you either have alot of friends and drive to create. never do it to impress people especially girls. it comes out uglier than you would expect.
>for buisness, take different angles and dont put your eggs in one basket.
>for the love of god, pick a genre and stick to it. but do your research in markets first. virtuosos are good for film and tv but thats it.
>social game is better than music ability. dont become a shut in. trust me
>also, if people find out youre gay or gayish or creepy or weird or some stupid shit like that, its more harm than good.
>being attractive in music scene helps you out tremendously if you suck in general. im not joking. ive seen some shit.
>network network network.
>cut corners, nobody gives a shit. sample shit, take others music. its all been said and done before. the average listener is not as smart as you think.
>most money in bands comes from shows. if you can bring a crowd to a bar, you have the upperhand in getting paid better. doesn't matter what bar.
>dont get too carried away in thinking about the rockstar life with music only. hookers are like $200 -$500 if you can find them safely, coke from her network of friends is like $50, a hotel room is like $170 a night. you can get that working shifts than just wasting time on messing around with beats and music notes.

>>74924811
Do you fold or roll up your legs before you sit down ?
>>
>>74924302
I got an Oxygen 49, it's basic as fuck but it does exactly what it's needed for.
>>
>>74923597
I want to start making my own synthpop/electro music, well really anything using a MIDI controller for the beats and keyboard parts. Think Toro Y Moi "Anything in return" or Daft Punk "Discovery" type stuff.

I have FL Studio 10 and I am OK with it, but I get lost pretty fast trying to figure out everything it offers, like how do I get all those synth sounds, the right effects, record single parts and duplicate easily etc etc... reason is probably better to use, but where do I download synth sounds and shit for free? I can play the music, I just really get the producing part of it.

Basically is there a good guide or website for a beginner?
>>
>>74928094
The DAW doesn't matter. To get synth sounds you need to dl vst's. There are a thousand and they can be pirated. Just dl a bunch of good ones (literally google beat vst's) and watch as many YouTube videos as you can on whatever topic you want to learn. That's basically it.
>>
>>74928154

Am I stupid for wanting to do everything via hardware? I don't like DAWs and computers (although Ableton seems useful for performing)
>>
>>74923656
is the Octatrack useful outside of electronic music? Seems way too powerful for the stuff i'd want it for. The only thing I could see me using it for is for sequencing, and I might as well just get a sequencer for that.
>>
>>74928275
No
>>
>>74928275
it is more fun that way imo but it is out of my price range
>>
>>74928401
Same here but i'm willing to save up via work. Getting a grand from my parents for my birthday, trying to work out best set up on that alone (maybe with £300-£500 left over from last job too)

I'm thinking a sequencer, drum machine, synth, sampler, multi-track recorder and mic will what I need, give or take (probably can drop the drum machine or sampler if needed)
>>
>>74925139
desu you just sound like you go into it for the wrong reasons vro

>>74928275
it's only stupid if you want to make complex music

if you don't "like" daws but you don't fully understand the capabilities and advantages i think you should spend some time there
>>
>>74928523
No I understand them, I just don't like making music on a laptop/computer is all. And I don't really want to make complex music, no
>>
>>74928343
It's 100% sample based so if your sampling skills are up to snuff it's theoretically great for every genre.

how do I get past the authorization shit via torrenting? I need to runt the patch and authorization code each time I open Ableton Live Suite which is a huge pain, would rather just buy it

Same issue with vsts also
>>
>>74928936
Read the instructions or torrent comments. I've dl Ableton and hundreds of vst's and never dealt with what you're describing
>>

>>
You guys probably get this question a lot but is it worth going to college for music production?Should i just start home recording or get an internship?
>>
>>74924302

Download a DAW.

Get a audio interface with a midi in and out and get a junker casio with a midi out and decide if you really wanna do this.

If you find yourself really wanting to adjust stuff with knobs live on the spot or play some drums I'd get a Akai Professional MPK Mini Mk2, it's got great pads, some knobs, and a mini two octave set of keys to complement your 88 key junker casio.

Or just get a midi interface.
>>
>>74928936

if you don't have the patience to figure out a 5 min crack you won't have the patience to learn a daw
>>
>>74929074
Im not sure. I usually grab Ching_Liu's wrap and you just install and apply his crack and that's it.
>>
>>74929079

idk depends on the school, my community college used digital performer and it was pretty ass but the fundamentals of what they taught were solid.

>>74929079
some might say it's worth it for making connections or meeting like minded people

there's nothing they'll teach you that you couldn't learn for free. learning on your own and working your way into a studio is what most people already in it recommend, either way is fine bud
>>
>>74929017
>>74929203
its good. imo there's not enough mid tones and a bit too much high, but thats my opinion
>>
>>74929246
which range more specifically
>>
>>74929242
Why the fuck would you buy a piece of shit Casio keyboard to use as a midi controller. You can get a perfectly fine usable midi controller for $50. Stupid faggot
>>
>>74929184
you fucking idiot it's just using the midi signal for vsts, you're not using the stock sounds. we're talking about midi controllers not synths.
>>
>>74929203
i can only listen on headphones right now and it sounds pretty good
>>
>>74929271
Yeah dickhead I misread it because it's a stupid fucking idea
>>
>>74929270

breh if he already has a audio interface with midi in you can get a casio for like $20, full set of keys, a $50 midi controller is two octave at best.
>>
>>74929270
i'm not saying it's a good choice i'm just saying youre an idiot for suggesting something irrelevant
>>
does anyone here use dim or aug chords regularly in their music? i kbow how to use them but whenever i have them in a chord progression it sounds alright but just better without them. anyone know tips for using these?
>>
>>74929242

idk the pads you're getting for $99 are so much better than other ones available for the same price, or even higher, with a two octave keyboard. try em.
>>
>>74929270
i use a yamaha psr 61 key for playing but i have other controllers for knobs and a 25 key oxygen on my desk i think it works out pretty nice
>>
>>74929311
I'm not suggesting something irrelevant. I misread the post you dumb shit. Stop sperging about it. And still, if you're just starting out it's much more beneficial to jump on Craigslist and grab a cheap used mpk mini as opposed to some piece of shit Casio from 1985 that was shit when it was new and hoping everything still works to save $20
>>
>>74929312
I use normal chords only and generally try to make music as simple as possible.
It obviously depends on what kind of music you make. I guess I use 7 chords sometimes in more ambienty tracks.
>>
>>74929281
>>74929246
ok thanks amigos
>>
>>74929329
"good for the price" doesn't mean not shit

i've tried them, they're bad. in that range, i'd just extract the groove from playing the and apply that to a preprogrammed beat
>>
>>74929354
idkkkkkkkkkkk you're looking at $99 for a tiny two octave keyboard, some shitty knobs, and some shitty pads

vs

a full size 88 keys for $20

kys

also why not both ?

i fucking recommended getting a $20 casio and a akai mini with a midi in.
>>
>>74929354
>there are multiple people in the thread

wasn't even my post, why do you type like you have self image issues and have to call everybody names because of it anon?
>>
>>74929354
ay my b the akai mini doesn't have a midi but still
>>
>>74929380

yeah you're sounding a lil tinny senpai
>>
>>74929432
Maybe because the post I was quoting called me an idiot you fucking retard
>>
>>74929443
Yes it does, it has USB midi so you don't even need an interface
>>
>>74929403
fuck dawg name a good set of pads then
>>
>>74929485
brehhhhhhhh i know that the akai mini can interface midi with usb, i meant that you couldn't plug in another midi controller through a midi in.
>>
>>74929503
It isn't the only option it was just a suggestion. There are literally hundreds of cheap options for someone wanting to start out with soft synths. If you're an absolute beginner chaining midi devices shouldn't be near the top of your priorities
>>
>>74925139
you should make music cause you enjoy it, and everything else should be a byproduct of that
sounds like you got into making music for the wrong reasons
>>
>>74925139
you are what's wrong with music.

Here are better tips of advice:
>Don't expect to live off your music
>Only make music for yourself to listen to. You can release it for the public, but don't make the music with that in mind. Make music that doesn't exist that you want to exist.
>Basically treat it as a hobby where you get something with your name on it at the end.

>>
>>74929627
yeah it really isnt.
>>
>>74929615
Yes. Everything around you sucks and music is your escape from reality. It makes your writing better because it gives you incentive to want to brighten up your world with music that you genuinely enjoy.
>>
>>74929548

but chaining midi devices is the shit though, specially when it can save you money

when i was starting out i felt really restricted by only having a two octave set of keys

my struggle boy setup

audiobox usb w/ a 88 key casio in the midi in
bx5 monitors
akai mini
AT mx50
akai mpk25 (and the pads suck compared to the mini)
guitars n saxophones n other gay live instruments

I layout sampled n sequenced drums, chord progressions with the casio, record guitar n saxophone over that, structure my loops n soloing n add live effects to make a song.
>>
>>74929654
i dont like using ableton as my main daw but i do agree with this and its capabilitys with racks are great
>>
>>74929593

>>74929654
>eq is perfectly fine
>reverb is okay
>delays range from okay to good but 3rd party is a good idea
>distortion and amp sims are bad
>compressor is solid and transparent
>grab bag of other useful stuff

i agree anon. i agree

racks and clips are indispensable to me but i'm starting to think i should try something else for mixing.... ableton is not so great for that...
>>
>>74929753

3rd party vsts for mastering tho

just cop wavves n ozone
>>
>>74929680
Yeah it all depends on the person and their needs. When I first started out years ago I bought a huge Axiom Pro 49 to use as a midi controller and the size was a fucking burden. Nowadays my setup is 90% hardware and any time I need just a midi controller I use something 2-3 octaves like the Reface DX or mpk mini ii

what's the trick to writing floaty bass lines? You know, like the bass is kind of noodling around but not in a way that seems flashy or draws excessive attention to itself? I feel I'm kind of stuck with riffs atm

I usually pick my bass and dick around a bit. Using octaves and improvising in pentatonic scale until something sounds good usually works.

assuming I know what you mean its important to think of the bass as percussion. Also try to outline a lot of arpeggios of your existing harmony.
