Beat it before it even came out

It isn't hard to "beat" one of the most overrated hiphop albums in the history of overrated hiphop albums. Seriously each song following the masked superhero and his aardvark pal from shitsville as they fight assorted superheroes has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the violent imagery, the album's only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of sampling old cartoons, all to make supervillains unvillainous, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Dumile vetoed the idea of Andre 3000 DJing; he made sure the album would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for his albums. The Doom series might be anti-military state (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Illmatic album in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

"No!" The writing is dreadful; the lyrics were terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time doom iterated a 4-beat 2-bar rhyme scheme.

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Dumile's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that he has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Madvillainy by the same Andre 3000. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are listening to Madvillainy at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to listen to Outkast" And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you listen to "Madvillainy" you are, in fact, trained to listen to Outkast.
