Fellow leaf here, I've only heard two SP albums but there were a little lacking for me to call them great, is this one really that much better than their other stuff?

I don't know about that. A lot of kids at my school could play the "Freewill" guitar solo but couldn't play three chords of a Ramones song if their lives depended on it because they didn't have the strength or ability to do it.
