How do I learn how to sing?

Same as learning to ride a bike, swim or math. Do it even if it sucks at the start, eventually you'll know your way around the thing.

If you don't have an instrument it is way more difficult because you will annoy the shit out of people with your acapella garbage singing.

Does anyone have suggestions on how not to embarrass yourself while practicing? I only sing in my car while driving, but that splits my concentration too much and I end up slipping the clutch.

Sing next to a piano (or well tuned guitar) - that means you can make sure you're in tune when singing so you're not picking up bad habits.
