this is bait but yeah people who like poppy (and this is very elitist but true) are either like 16 and dont know any better or if they're in their 20s are probably stupid or at the very least not very well-read. will explain further.

1. the poppy character

poppy was very publicly a series of "video art" viral videos cooked up by an, im assuming, not recognized or institutionally respected video artist (as in this is a guy trying to be an artist but he, as far as i can tell, isn't recognized by the art world, either mainstream or underground, which is most of what would mark an artist like him as a respectable voice, as far as i'm aware). the whole poppy character is supposed to be this creepy melding of human being / digital product, robot, etc. meant to critique idk, im imagining how social media / the viral culture industry turns people into commodities, advances in technology enabling the creating of convincing fake humans in various forms, etc, you can imagine. while this point is somewhat banal and already overplayed, the character could probably take advantage of its critiques by doing something genuinely funny, entertaining, or creepy with the subject matter (in the way that like PC music, if you think about the critiques its making is saying some sort of banal, played out shit but it does it in a way that is so enjoyable and funny that it makes up for it). well poppy fails in all these regards IMO. - continued

so abt the artist himself and what he's doing. he could maybe actually be doing something sort of clever even though the videos themself aren't very impressive. he might be intentionally dumbing down his art to appeal to the high school kids he knows would find her making his whole project more like a stunt in viral marketing as opposed to creating genuinely good art or it could be him trying to make this kind of video art specifically for kids and nobody else and doing so requires that poppy be a pretty simple kind of character / critique. thats maybe kind of cool and respectable but that basically means that if you like her you're sort of getting duped

this is pretty simple and similar to last point. poppy songs are generally pretty boring pop tracks with wacky lyrics over the top that exemplify the poppy character and its critiques. similar situation to the previous thing - the critique is banal and its not done in a compelling way which could redeem its banality but it doesnt have that so idk its shit i guess. music production isnt creative like PC music and the lyrics are generally also so on the nose abt what poppy is and just like lazy, not creative satire. PC music lyrics Kero Kero Bonito for example aren't complex but they create a really compelling world by describing all these strange kind of stereotype, dream world activities in really celebratory ways that make you feel like you're inside idk some sort of weird utopic videogame abt going to high school in some virtual world - so already thats one artistic strategy kkb uses and does really well. Poppy lyrics are like straight up very obvious satire.

lol okay, so first two are what I said was the charcter's critique is - embodying human being as commodity / unreal entity, etc. and then the 3rd line is like the edginess / creepiness that they keep trying to shoehorn into the videos. all done in an absurdly hamfisted, obvious manner. like all you can get out of these lyrics is "ooh yes, hahahah i was correct about my belief that this is what she is critiquing, im very clever" or like "fuck yeah, poppy, tell em' this is your critique, its here, its powerful af, ppl need to hear this incredibly banal, played out critique that has been done much better by other artists" and then the verses are an attempt at comedy by juxtaposing banal, superficial, and very stereotypically superficial things that she likes and saying "thats my style" - yes we get it, people are what they like, what you like determines your value as a commodity, people are commodities in an abstract sense, and you are literally a commodity because you are a robot / virtual person that one can assumedly purchase physically (as in owning a poppy robot to be your friend) or purchase virtually by like identifying your own personal style with liking poppy. yes i am so smart for understanding what you meant. so basically what im saying is poppy's music / art does nothing to its banal critiques and in that sense serves about as much function as my posts here apart from tricking 15 year olds into liking her / identifying with her as a commodity which is actually sort of funny. my point isnt that the artist definitely sucks, he's maybe trolling and is a genius, what i'm saying is you probably suck if you like her.

so i just want to clarify why its bad one more time. musicians and even serious video artists aren't philosophers or academics, so its understandable that if their art is meant to convey a critique that originates in philosophy or academia (say for example the digital media / culture industry stuff poppy is doing, a punk talking about how unfair it is to work a 9 to 5 job, which would be a marxist critique at its core, etc.) the critique they're making isn't going to be of the same complexity / quality that a philosopher or academic would make. thats super obvious. the musician is probably going to make a pretty dumbed down and not complex version of the critique. then why is this sometimes seen as good and sometimes seen as cringey? well its all abt the way the critique is packaged IMO. I think the song Janie Jones by the clash is an example of a simple critique being packaged in a really compelling way. The song #1 is quite well written, it has a lot of emotion conveyed by the joe strummer (so even if you dont listen to the lyrics, the song is still enjoyable on a purely musical level), and the lyrics dont only make a point, they tell the story or a character who embodies the critique. they also do so in a way where the character isn't only its critique - we emotionally relate to the character's struggle because we do the same things as they do, the character is complicated by portrayed at once as a person like the audience and also as a person who is potentially violent, somewhat pathetic, fucks prostitutes, etc. in a sense the song is both musically fun and its critique is delivered in a suitably complex way that even its lyrics can exist as a story that modifies and has fun with the critique - continued

so when someone listens to Janie Jones they don't feel like its an artist simply telling you a critique, it sounds like a human being who is communicating a struggle they share with the audience on an emotional level and it feels like a fun song that you can dance, mosh to, and sing along to without even thinking about the lyrics. so the more academic side of the critique becomes secondary to the song itself. of course one can say "oh yes, well this song is making a marxist critique abt x, y, and z" but very few people would recognize that as the song's primary or only value - they'd say its good for all the other reasons I stated AND that it can also be analyzed as a form of marxist criticism if someone wanted to go down that road. Poppy's music on the other hand is cringey because it exists purely for the critique which by necessity is a bland and dumbed down version of its academic counterparts. there's no sort of relatable emotion being communicated (as in for example someone writing a song about how pissed off or sad they are abt the viral culture industry, etc.), the song itself is incredibly boring and simple (not well produced, sounds rushed and not well thought out, no variation in arrangement, not really catchy etc, or anything else someone could identify that would make it a good song ON ITS OWN. if you took the lyrics away the song itself would be remarkably boring and pointless) and the lyrics dont contain any sort of literary or poetic devices that could be appreciated as enjoyable on an aesthetic level (theres no real use of irony, nothing enjoyable is done with the language, there's no enjoyable sequence language, no story telling, etc.). so basically what is there thats supposed to make this song good? the song itself functions entirely to deliver this critique and does nothing to make that critique enjoyable.

like final quick point: the first test of any good piece of music, art, etc. should be your initial reaction to it: if you feel emotionally effected by it in some way (energized, confused, saddened) then its at least doing something and if you feel a very strong and powerful emotion or if you find it really funny and weird and confusing its probably quite good and then you can worry about how clever it is or if its "well crafted" or boundary pushing afterward.
