GOAT! A fine example of mid 70s NYC punk! This album was released ONE YEAR BEFORE The Ramones debut, and both bands shared the stage at Max's Kansas City AND CBGBs back in the day, yet, only die hard fans and old timers even remember or care about The Dictators. "Handsome" Dick Manitoba runs a bar on the lower east side of New York called, (Obviously) Manitoba's and, from what I heard, it's a cool place to drink and hang out. The Dictators also opened for Kiss, and AC/DC on their first U.S. Tour. Google this band, and pick up Please Kill Me by "Legs" McNeil and Jillian McCain. Handsome Dick Manitoba has a LOT of stories to share in that book, especially about how AC/DC were cool, and Kiss were schmucks, and also about his fight with Wayne/Jayne County! Great band! I live for cars and girls...........

I say the reunion tour last spring and was very disappointed. The new singer is trying to imitate Stiv by trying to act and dress up like him. This is why I didn't see The Germs with Shane West as their front man. And they only did the whole Young, Loud, and Snotty album, and TWO songs from We Have Come For Your Children. (Aint It Fun, and Son of Sam!) They should've done more songs. I felt cheated. Let the memories and legacy of The Dead Boys live on and don't try to revive it. They gavels three great albums, and we should be satisfied with THAT!

Saw them four days before Nigey died. It was in Chicago, and it was cold as fuck. I thought either A) I was the only person who would show up, or B) The gig would be cancelled, but the place was packed! Other than the fact that their guitars went out of tune in between each song for the first half of their set, it was quite a gig! Who could know that Nigey would be hit by a truck trying to cross a Texas highway by the end of the week? Glad to say that I saw one of their last concerts, ever!

Please Kill Me isn't written by Handsome Dick Manitoba. It's actually written by "Legs" McNeil and Jillian McCain. It's an oral history of the New York Punk Subculture starting from 1967 and The Velvet Underground up to 1980 when the scene REALLY started to change. But, yeah, Handsome Dick Manitoba is interviewed and has LOTS of great stories to share, so it's essential reading for not only Dictators fans, but for anybody who is interested in the early days of the New York punk scene in general.

Now if you want to read a book that was actually written by the man himself, I would recommend The Punk Rock Book of lists. It doesn't have anything to do with The Dictators per se, but it's a good book of trivia nonetheless.

Don't forget to check out any of the bands connected to Samurai Spirits Skinheads (SSS), especially Bull the Buffalos

The SSS was (and maybe still is?) largely like any skinhead “crew” in the traditional sense; however, it was something of a nationalist movement as well. The Werewolfen compilation from 1995 first brought their scene and movement a lot of exposure around the world. Perhaps the most famous of the SSS bands is Sledge Hammer - whose name struck a chord with English speakers as being very similar to Skrewdriver.

In the mid- to late-‘80s, Japanese skinheads were influenced by the Nazi imagery and nationalist / right-wing politics coming from the British, European, and American RAC and WP scenes. Japanese skinheads thought it was entirely logical that they should identify and be “allied with” white right-wing skinheads from around the world - just as Hitler’s Germany allied with Japan in World War II. A lot of the early SSS bands were intensely nationalist, some even describing themselves as “Nazi skinheads”!

The SSS bands’ lyrics certainly deal with patriotic, nationalist, and even somewhat xenophobic subjects. There is little, if any, outright racism evidenced in SSS recordings at all. Due to that, and the rather serious language barrier, these bands have gotten a lot of notice from traditional skinheads around the world. The varying right-wing skinhead factions accepted them to greater and lesser degrees as well.

Thanks for posting. Radio Birdman and The Saints are two of my favorite Aussie bands. Saw Radio Birdman about 10 years ago when they finally made it to the states, but I'm still waiting for The Saints.
