I have the opposite problem.

I can nail timing and rhythm on bass but I can't do either on a guitar.

Then again, i'm not really a guitar player by training, so it's probably just inexperience.

>>
>>74849797
I'm not going to research it but it probably has more than two gain stages. You should be able to hear them kick in as you turn the gain knob up. Open up your master volume and see if you can hear what I'm talking about, this is something a guitarist needs to be familiar with.
>>
>>74849893
the master volume starts distorting after past 3 o'clock. that sums up two gain ('dirt' stages seems what were talking about) stages

>>
>>74850001
Do this: open up your master volume all the way and then slowly start turning up your gain. You should be able to hear distinctive "steps" in the gain as you do so. How may steps you amp has I don't know but it's probably more than two. Understanding gain stages and setting yourself up to take advantage of what an amp has to offer is crucial knowledge for a hard rock guitarist.
>>
>>74850122
you shouldn't be pushing down on your strings any harder than a girl pushes down on your taint so you squirt buckets bruh

What's lower than a B? The financial rating of Gibson Brands Inc.
The famed guitar maker had its rating lowered to Caa3, nine notches into junk territory, with a negative outlook, as maturity of $520 million in debt approaches.
The privately-held company will need to refinance the debt before July 2018 or it faces a likely default. Moody's Investors Service Inc. said last week that there's "uncertainty" about the company's ability to refinance this debt and that its capital structure is "unsustainable." Gibson didn't respond to request for comment.
Although Gibson's finances are the most stressed, according the rating firm, it's not the only music company that's playing the blues.
In December, Moody's moved piano maker Steinway Music Group to Caa1, from B2, because of the company's highly-leveraged balance sheet. The company, owned by Paulson & Co., has a $300 million senior secured term loan due in 2019 and is leveraged at 8 times debt to Ebitda (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization), according to Moody's.
Last year, Fender Musical Instruments Corp., partly owned by Servco Pacific Capital and TPG Capital LP, was able to pull itself up to B1 from B2, which is still in speculative territory but only by four notches. The upgrade followed Fender's move to pay down $40 million of debt in 2016, bringing its leverage to 2.5 times debt to Ebitda. Still, the company has posted small revenue and has poor product diversity, Moody's said.
>>
Music retailer Guitar Center Inc. had its outlook changed to negative in April (rating maintained at B2) as a result of the challenging retail environment and substantial debt maturities approaching in the next two years. Guitar Center is owned by Bain Capital LP.
None of these companies responded to request for comment Tuesday.
The industry generally is vulnerable to any dips in consumer spending, due to the often-discretionary nature of musical instrument purchases.
But for Gibson specifically, Moody's also cited a reduction in the number of products it's selling, new regulations and turnover among senior management as causes for concern.
"We expect Ebitda to remain essentially flat this year as we think margin enhancements will not be enough to offset revenue declines," Moody's said in the Aug. 17 downgrade. "Moody's expects a significant decrease in revenue this year as the company reduces the number of SKUs in the Audio business and deals with the lingering effects of supply shortage issues that began in the first quarter of the fiscal year ended March 2018, new government regulations for certain wood products, and long-term secular pressure on guitar volumes in the Musical Instrument business."
Turnover at the "senior financial management level creates challenges to executing a quick operational turnaround," the rating firm added.
Levered at a rate of 10 times debt to Ebitda, Gibson has $375 million in senior bond debt maturing on Aug. 1, 2018. An additional $145 million in senior bank debt has a springing maturity of June 23, 2018, if the company doesn't manage to refinance the bonds.
The Nashville-based company, famous for its Les Paul guitar, has $1.2 billion in revenue annually, according to Moody's, and manufactures brands Gibson, Philips, Epiphone, Kramer, Baldwin, Onkyo, KRK and Stanton.

I think you have to get one for dat grunty toan. I prefer spectors for low midrange, honestly.

You would have to widen the bridge pickup a shit ton because the entire pickup assembly has to go in for that to work. And the neck pickup is a weird ass size too if I recall.

It's possible but a lot of work. It might not sound the same either. I know people who put Precision pickups in their J-bass because they like the J-bass necks but it still sounds kinda off to me.

I dont know what the hell that is but it's not a real rickenbacker. Closest match tonewise would be a nice passive vintage-ish jazz if you want to save a few quid, but the weird honky midrange pickups and neck through situation on the rick definitely put it in its own place if you absolutely have to have one.

I bought a mandolin for 5€.
I began to work on it so I can get it playing again, the hardware was okay on it, the tuning pegs just needed a bit of lubrication.
The thing about it what seemed kinda odd was the unfinished spruce top on it and the fact that there was no plywood used anywhere in the acoustic parts. Even with the old strings it sounded really snappy so what I'm asking here is would it be a good idea to give it a light coat of some oil or would it dampen the tone?
>>
>>74850122
Action could be out of whack if you can fit a credit card under the strings and they're higher than the card most likely the action is too high. You might have zero callous which makes it a lot more painful and feels like you have to give it more pressure than necessary.

Mandos are generally finished like violins which is often a few wipe downs of a watered down mineral varnish. I'd jump on a luthiers or mando forum, the community is pretty particular about them and you could affect the value substantially with your finish choice.

One for every tuning you use consistently with an alternate/backup to each. You can count extended scale guitars as tunings too.
Add 1-2 acoustics.
If you use one tuning consistently, then anything over 4 guitars is retarded for example.

I joined a band recently, and one of the guys uses a cheap marshall combo stack that sounds awful. I forget the exact model; but it's definitely on the lower end.

There's something legitimately painful about hearing his clean tone. It's glassy and there's something about it whenever he hits high notes it almost causes you to wince.

It also doesn't help that this guy has a multi-effects pedal and doesn't know how to program it, save effects, or switch to different effects without fumbling around with his pedal for 5 seconds....and he's the "lead guitarist".

play with people. I've found it's significantly easier to follow a drum track (whether you're jamming with them in person or only listening to a drum track) than it is to follow a metronome, IMO.

Once you can *feel* the drum beat and you can feel yourself get into that rhythm, then you can start worrying about staccato and legato playing. In fact, this is Classical's bread and butter -- music that isn't four square and instead appears to bend rhythm depending on the passage:

The other way to play it is like this. The most difficult part is the first four notes at the beginning of the bar played at the original speed (134 bpm). It seems that my hand coordination sucks playing this or is it just played with a lot of string muting? That way it sounds a little bit muddy in my opinion, while Hiroyuki Hayashi does this without too much effort and it sounds nice and clean it seems.

Acoustic Simulators are what you're looking for. They work reasonably well from my experience as long as you have single coil pickups.
>>
>>74858145
can you recommend a good one? the one on amplitube isnt too realistic
>>
>>74858092
You need to record guitar through the microphone and add a little bit to the mix.

First track -- acoustic sim (Bias FX have pretty nice sounding acoustic amp).
Second track -- microphone.
Third track -- reverb.

First and second track sends their signal to reverb channel.
This is how I've got these tracks.

I have actually BiasFx installed but I don't use it that much because I'm getting this really annoying clicking sound and overly distorted sound when I try to get anything out from it. That's why I use Amplitube for distorted guitars. Here's quick test with the acoustic sim, it needs more balancing of course and I didn't add anything else than just acoustic sim but sounds promising:

Anyone elses playing/musical habits change with the seasons?

For me I always gravitate towards acoustic guitar (no effects) in the fall and winter, also more melodic playing over timbral. In the spring/summer I get more into ambient and textural playing with lots of effects. It's been this way for a couple of years now.

>>
>>74859278
Just play a normal guitar ffs. I'm also a bassist and startend playing guitar, you get over it. If you have a serious issue with the strings being too close together for your hands then you can try guitars with a wider nut, but just get used to it.
>>
>>74859264
>Ahh wait, I didn't understand it was a pedal. That's interesting.
lol. If you're working with VSTs or modeling amps or something you should be able to find acoustic simulators as well. I just bought the Mooer because it was cheap and I wanted to mess around with it. Works okay if you ask me, of course it doesn't sound like an actual acoustic guitar but you get that character and openness from an acoustic, especially when strumming chords.
>>
>>74859278
It'll work, I think 7 strings have the same scale and you can tune those in standard with no problem (you just have to use light strings).

Really though I would just adapt, it's not that big of a deal you get used to the differences.

Nah it's fine. I honestly think it's because I restrung my guitar with slightly larger gauged strings. I measured the gap in the trem, and it's just under half an inch. A normal floating trem is supposed to be like 1/8"
>>
>>74863405
Tighten those two screws, detune the guitar first, keep tightening the screws and strings until the trem is flat to the body and the strings are in tune and hey presto.

You're right, it's bc you restrung with higher gauge strings, I've done it before and it's easy to fix.
>>
>>74863405
those two screws on the left hand side need to go further into the body. screw them in a bit more and you will see that trem bridge move down. You are supposed to remove the springs first. It's annoying to get them back on as they will have to stretch further. Use a screwdriver and pull them.

Ideally should I use the string that comes after the one I pick to stop my hand or should I stop it with my hand directly?

It seems like the former would be more efficient, but I still see people pick really fast and accurately just stopping the pick manually without needing to hit the string after.

My hand naturally stops after I pick without needing to hit the string after so far but as long as it doesn't affect my sound for the worse more efficient picking is preferable.

This is some next level autism, don't overthink it man just play what's more efficient for you
>>
>>74849178

this is shit when it comes to fuzz, but it's nice for adding toen flavor. I usually play with the sustain/fuzz all the way lowest and tone at 2 o clock so it's barely a fuzz pedal
>>
>play amazingly perfectly, sound exactly like whatever artist I'm immitating
>damn I better record this shit so I know how awesome I am
>recording sounds nothing like what I was playing
>literally sounds like a drunk guy playing sloppily under a mountain of fuzz and static

who else knows this feel?
>>
>>74865356
there's a disconnect between your perception while you're playing and reality. What you sound like on th recording is what you actually sound like . Only thing you can do is practice until you're happy with the recorded sound
>>
>>74865356
Recording your playing is ruthless. But that's the best way to improve.

whats up 4followers

I've been playing guitar for something like seven years and I still can't play some shreddy stuff that I want to play.

My right hand is just fine, but the ring and pinky finger on my left hand just tense the fuck up whenever I play anything longer than a couple bars and it seems like no matter how much I practice to a metronome they don't loosen up or get stronger.

I remember having this problem years ago as well.

Am I just fucked? Should I just stick to some simpler stuff?

Just a little update, I ended up having to tighten the tremolo two more times and it seems like it's all set now. There was still a significant gap, less than 1/4", but still a bit noticeable.

what you practice to a metronome?

did xxxtentacion bring indie music back?

Your mic placement is off. Being in the center of a speaker gives you all of that glassy treble. Move your mic to the left or right a few inches, making it off center, so you're getting the full dynamics of the sound.
>>
>>74866156

My guess is you're trying a little bit and then give up because it's hard and hurts your hands. Well news flash, you aren't going to just wake up one day and be able to shred easily just because you've been playing X number of years and can play other styles. To play shred you have to practice shred ONLY.

sure some people are blessed with giant hands and swift fingers, but for the rest of us if you want to shred you have to really put your nose to the grind and practice hard shred songs until you get it down perfectly. I'm talking putting hours a day on one section of one song. Your fingers are going to cramp and it's going to hurt. Sometimes it will feel like your hand is going to fall off and you'll need to go to the hospital. You have to just play through the pain and keep practicing

Mostly I just try do some single string exercises n one key playing the same pattern.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51OMFYGG-fs

Recently I've been doing the single string exercise Guthrie plays in this video. Everytime I do that first lick with the major third my ring and pinky fingers stiff up quickly. As I move up the neck and the shape changes the exercise is slightly easier, but my fingers still stiffen up quickly.

What do these little notes mean?
>>
>>74866361

play actual songs instead of meme exercises.
>>
>>74866337
I don't buy that. I'm not going to continue playing if I get intense crmaping in my hand, which is what I get if I continue to play longer than a few bars of something even moderately fast. This isn't typical pain. I've gotten pain from my wrist when working on alternative picking and accuracy and speed, but that goes away fairly quickly when you more and more. The stiffness I get in my left hand makes my hand completely tighten up and renders it completely unable to do any accurate motion whatsoever.
>>74866390
If I can't even play this exercise right there's no reason to believe I'd be able to play a song using the same technique.
And frankly, I tried just that years ago. I worked at osme meme Yngwie Malmsteen song for like months on end nonstop and I still can't play it to this day.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0VhD95WFGY
Look at this, undisputed skill. Yngwie is crying. So... Dave played with orchestra couple of years ago and he didn't bother practicing the songs. There were few other clips on youtube but they were removed because someone doesn't want to leave any evidence. You can hear him playing wrong notes etc on this clip too. It's fun to read the comments.

so your hand cramped up? that doesn't mean you can't do it. you're afraid of leaving your comfort zone and have no confidence, so you'll forever be a noob.

because I feel bad for you I'll give you one more piece of advice: practice pinky hammer ons. Your pinky is clearly weak as fuck, so stretch your hand out with index barring the first frett and hammer on with the 6th/7th fret of every string with your pinky.
>>
>>74866700
Well I appreciate the advice. I'll give it a shot and try and try a little harder at working through the cramping.
>>
>>74866826
You need to check few things: your posture, the way you hold your guitar, is your neck to high or low and how is your hand's relation to it, are you playing in awkward angle etc. Check some videos on youtube. Second: stretch your fingers and hand, stretch your whole arm and do some rotator cuff exercises, make sure you stretch your whole back as well and rotate your torso around. It all comes down to issues you are having as a whole, not just your little fingers. The issue might be coming from your elbow or something, for example. But regular stretching helps to alleviate lot of issues. Of course it will take time so it's like brushing your teeth: you need to do it daily, couple of times.
>>
>>74866917
Alright, I'll give that a shot too, thanks.
>>
>>74866917
I mean *your neck* = *guitar's neck/fretboard*
>>
>>74866274
wtf the recordings didnt come out glassy and harsh wtf. maybe its because the amp has no transistors?
>>
>>74864843
Sounds like a rest stroke for picking. If you're doing a sweep on two or more adjacent strings that's what you do. (Timed so the motion is in one direction only.) Otherwise, you don't want your pick stuck in the strings so lift it and be ready for the next note.

And the fact that some people work with computers 10+ hours a day and I noticed that this caused me lot of stiffness in my hands and wrists. It's good to have some kind of rehabilitating exercises to prevent issues because if you work with computer all day at office or shit your wrists are locked in one position etc, this has given me lot of issues when playing guitar.

Yeah, he was so bad at playing with a symphony. To this day, I haven't heard better than Uli Jon Roth doing Vivaldi. His timing and tone can't be beat.

capo on 6th fret makes the song easy
>>
>>74867540
still in drop d?
>>
>>74867246
Marty Friedman is a midget and he plays circles around most of guitar players in world. It's not becuse your fingers are too short, it's because you are too lazy.
>>
>>74867578

no put a capo on 6th fret with standard tuning, it's not technically the way lindsey plays it (he plays capo on 4th drop d) but it sounds pretty close and makes the song playable.

Also if you notice the album version actually uses two guitars instead of travis picking anyway
>>
>>74867657
the only part I have difficulty with is barring the A and putting pinky and ring finger on the 5th fret (relative o the capo)

I have trouble not touching other strings while trying to reach

i basically followed this guy's tutorial, except instead of a half barr on the 6th with my fingers, I cheated and moved my capo down to the 6th fret so I wouldn't have to barr anything and could just focus on the picking. It sounds 99% the same, and like I said the album version uses 2 guitars so even if you played it perfectly it'd be different anyway.
