Finnish dm is for whatever reason very unique and strange, definitely has a strong identity forged by acts like Xysma, Disgrace, Abhorrence etc.
Their black metal scene I guess never had a similar foundation, and no one seems to have followed Beherit or early ImpNaz. If anything, I hear more of the melodic tendencies that inform the country's power metal bands as an influence. Finnish bm tends to be cheesy and lame, I wouldn't rank it among the top 15 countries for the genre.

It's honestly frustrating, I hear about so many ostensibly "amazing" bands coming from Finland and they always disappoint. Same with Iceland, although at least there's something semi-interesting going on with those bands. Your average third tier second wave Norwegian band that put out their first record in 1995 is still leagues ahead of the best thing coming out of Finland right now.

Honestly with a few exceptions, Norway, Sweden and maybe Greece are the only countries to have ever 'got' black metal. Honorable mentions for Quebec and Poland. Of course many other countries have a couple of relevant artists in the genre, but they never possessed a noteworthy 'scene.' I say this in a country of 300+ million that boasts only a handful of genuinely good bm bands.
>>74834102

All great bands, but I wouldn't say they "got" black metal the way, say, Greece did. In fact, the best french bm bands are the ones that have deviated from the norm and become highly idiosyncratic

>>74834182

Ukraine has way too much atmoshit to qualify for me. Even worshiped acts like Hate Forest are really nothing special. I haven't heard anything good from Canada outside Quebec, or from Germany. Well, does Bethlehem count? They are/were something special.

>shitty thrash acts from south america got black metal as well as anything from scandinavia

give me a good black metal album with female vocals
>>74834370
Yeah it's not enough to have the image, the lyrics, the 'atmosphere' or even the riffs, though most bands dont even get that far. There's an extra ounce of inspiration that makes something like Immortal so great with countless listens.
>>74834336
But do any of Moonblood's 500 demos scrape together even one great song? I also dont think of RoB as pure bm, as with Bethlehem.
>>74834485
Melencolia Estatica and literally nothing else
>>74834493

>>74834485
bethlehem - bethlehem
>>74834596
That is true, but the remainder is enough information to judge a scene. Say there are ten scenes with ten bands each and, after a nice culling, only three countries have at least one band that isn't shit, and two of those countries only have one good band. That still means that those three countries have the best scenes, and that one of them has *the* best.

good black metal albums?
>>74837969
Yes.
So /metal/ It's been some years that I listen to meal and I enjoy a lot some classic of every genre (not glam) but one thing that always made me feel strange is that I never found an album that has the musical part convey the message it's trying to give better than pic related. The music in it has so many different point of views. For example the violence in "angel of death" or the horror film style atmosphere by "criminally insane" are conveyed in a very smart and immediate way. There really isn't in the history of metal another "altar of sacrifice" (maybe my favoruite song on the album apart from postmortem+raining blood), it always struck me how the first riff really puts you in the perspective of the victim in the song, it's really obvious that the sacrifice will die soon. Or in "jesus saves" how the song begins slowly and ends with mad solos, as it represents the golgotha that human fate is, that culminates in the horrendous moment of death and denied salvation. Has anyone some recs of albums like this??

Welcome.
I've included two Mayhem albums. The first is their most famous, but I really appreciate their later stuff - vocalist Attila evolved into an absoloute God. Neither of them have the infamous singer Dead - he can probably be heard best of the "Live in Liepzig" album. I didn't include it even though it's my favourite by Mayhem - start off with what I posted and see if you get a taste for them.
The last album is a bit of a love it or hate it album. You'll see why very quickly. Don't worry if you don't like it, but I'd advise you listen to it at least once.

None. There is literally no metal band I can think of whose later works I prefer more than their early stuff. Saxon sorta, the only album from them I really like much is Crusader but even then that's their sixth album and they've got like 15 or some shit. I guess Faithful Breath might be more apt, my two favorite albums from them are actually their last two but of course they haven't released an album since the 80's. In metal artists typically peak with their first couple of albums and it all goes downhill from there. There are cases in which a band will release a really good album after a string of mediocre to bad releases (Judas Priest released Painkiller after a decade where the only good thing they did was Defenders for example) but metal is a genre driven by youthful aggression. As bands progress they soften up their style, sometimes they become more pop-oriented (Carcass, Judas Priest), other times (Gorguts for example) they overdose on the whole experimental pill while losing the metal edge they used to have, and other times they just retread old ground over and over while never topping their early work because everything they do going forward sounds more and more clean while slightly dialing down what made their first few albums heavy (Suffocation/Slayer).

Every guitar riff in Altars Of Madness sounds like a whirlwind of demonic souls cursing the very light that's abandoned them for all eternity. The album Into Darkness by Winter gives off the very feeling of roaming the desolate wastelands of a city in winter that was ravaged by nuclear war, the drums pounding off like bombs going off in the distance while you grudgingly trudge through the dilapidated buildings and obstructing your way through streets blanketed in bullet shells, shrapnel, and permafrost. Beherit's Drawing Down The Moon gives off the feeling of being stranded in space away from civilization as you painfully suffocate within the vacuum.

you're on a metal thread on /mu/, what the fuck are you thinking when you write redundant shit like this
>>74840903
/metal/ is a subculture of /fitlit/, not /mu/

Hi there!
You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!
Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bit to help you get used to the anonymous image-board culture!

why is jazz such a fetish for faux intellectual people I will never understand
>>74841386
it's harder to understand than pop for average clueless people, yet at the sate time it's not near as grandiose and disciplined as classical, i.e. it has (well, had) this "cool" classy attitude

Tourists OUT
This thread is full of autism
is it a good idea to get a cheap acoustic to learn metal guitar? would it be bad for the strings or something
>>74844166
thats actually a really fucking dumb idea
How the fuck did an alcoholic like Mustaine manage to sing and play the rhythm to Holy Wars live?
>>74844166
You could buy a cheap electric w an amp, it'd probably work a lot better for what you're trying to do. Prices are comparable too

>>74844249
I can't tell what's more impressive, that or managing to get kicked from Metallica for being too much of a drunkard
>>74844166
get a cheap electric. sometimes there's decently priced combo packs of amp+guitar. quality isn't great though. If you go with used gear you can get more for your money but you'd need to know what to look for
>>74844166
this is a terrible idea
you will have a terrible time bending, sweeping, switching quickly, tremolo picking, and basically with everything else. electric guitars are cheap as hell. you can get one for ~$80 and an amp for ~$100 more. spend the money.
