Is it true that people didn't care about these when they came out or is it some bullshit myth? I remember hearing some Juan Atkins interview where he said he couldn't wait to get one back in the early 80s because having a programmable drum machine was huge.

I think it was the 303 that was more a piece of cheap garbage in its day.
The 808 was only ever meant to be "affordable" in the sense that it was technically cheaper than a LinnDrum or an Oberheim DMX. The same way that a Jupiter 8 was "cheaper" than an OB-Xa in the day.
