Are you kidding, post 40s music was always about message, not direct profit from its products, the companies owners always have other companies to get money from

This has always been the case in popular music. The Beatles were turned away because guitar music was believed to be old hat. No money was put into marketing Pet Sounds but was instead put into The Beach Boys greatest hits record because Pet Sounds was different from what else was already selling. Hell, even Beethovens 3rd symphony wasn't liked because the intro was too short.
