The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

The Brave Little Abacus - Just Got Back From Discomfort — We’re Alright
>midwest emo, experimental rock

Mixed but generally pretty good feelings on this one. I’ll say right now that I’m not a huge fan of midwest emo’s penchant for strained, wordy vocals and loose DIY instrumentation, but I can at least say that this album puts a considerable amount of effort into having a fair amount of unique features. Chiptune? Sure. Ambient drone? Alright. Ska? Math rock?. Again, I’m not the biggest fan of the genre so maybe these influences are mainstays in midwest emo, but from my perspective they do a good job of breaking away from the “default” arrangement that it spends most of its time working with.

Overall though, this was pretty decent. The production and performances are good, the song structures are interesting (esp the way tracks lead into one another), and it does a fair job incorperating the smorgasbord of influences I mentioned earlier without completely losing track of where the album’s core sound is. The vocals and lyrics can be a bit grating sometimes which is how I feel about a lot of emo, and I didn’t watch much Malcom in the Middle when I was a kid so the dialogue samples didn’t really make me feel much, but I can’t really fault the album for that; they’re a nice touch.

good friend rodriguez:
>Matana Roberts - Pov Piti
"haha she like Meredith Monk- whoa shit"
The initial instrumental is very GY!BE-like before the sax delivers some simple phrases, with a gosepl chorus. I especially love Roberts' spoken delivery, a powerful multi-faced monologue of the struggles of her people, reminded me of Laurie Anderson. After a brief climax, breakdown, and respite, a haunting violin leads the group (just how big is it??) back to reality, where the conditions described by Roberts are clear to see. and that piano at the end really edged me i gotta hear this later

Trip up:
>Keith Jarratt - Part II C (from the Koln concert)
nigga I love me some jazz piano
this is some credits music if I ever heard some
i forgot this was a live album
he is feeding my soul
Why does he include that much fucking applause in the recording.

Letov:
>Mingus - The Shoes of the Fisherman's Wife Are Some Jive Ass Slippers
hell what an opener
Mingus' more controlled orchestration, as opposed to focus on improv (see: that guy that whined about Mingus and the counterpoints from s) is my kind of thing. If only I had been able to see his ensemble perform live.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
In 4th place:
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Nyarlathot
>Lee Morgan - A Night in Tunisia
Everytime I see "Tunisia" I imagine one of those animations where it looks like a moving mosaic or wall painting. A little less so here, because I was thinking of Art Blakey's Night In Tunisia when listening to this. All three solos were enjoyable, but this track was the most traditional out of all the others, and lacked the bite the others had.

The Snuggalos - Hocus Opus (2015)
>psychedelic pop, lo-fi indie

Triangle, you've got some good releases on your label, damn. This is one of the simplest, most fun releases I've heard in a while, unassuming and cute on the surface but with a huge garagey, noisy element lurking underneath the surface that serves as this album's interesting, gripping core. The production and the occasional soundscaping is great, despite the lo-fi nature of the tape, and the songs are written with finesse and a shocking amount of depth. Cuter, poppier songs make little impression, but the majority of this is damn great.

Verse - Aggression (2008)
>hardcore punk

One of the least engaging, most flaccid hardcore punk albums around. It's nice and epic, sure, yet completely hollow underneath the surface, completely unmemorable through and through. Not much else to say about it, really.

Goddamn you are a smart boy thanks for telling me this. What a great time Flood is, a slow start sort of but after Flood I is pretty close to flawless. I'm sad I hadn't listened to this earlier bc its pretty singular. Flood II is beautiful, Flood III is crushingly heavy (which is pretty hard to achieve IMO), and Flood IV is so minimal and relaxing. Yeah basically. Making a chart lets you organize a backlog and work through a large group of albums, while also letting others know what you thought of the ones you've already heard and suggest what you could listen to next.

Also charts sometimes have themes (droning someone else's taste, exploring music from a certain genre/country, etc)

and welcome!! enjoy yr stay

友川かずき - 光るクレヨン (Gleaming Crayon) (2016)
>singer/songwriter, contemporary folk

I get the hype behind the vocals, totally. Tomokawa's control over his voice is incredibly impressive, he's over-the-top without ever becoming cheesy or overbearing. The instrumentals are a lot more low-key, creating much less of a real impression than the vocals. They're still very good, they just leave a bit to be desired since the vocals are so spectacular. Still one of the most forward-thinking singer/songwriter albums in a while, though.

Gavin Bryars - The Sinking Of The Titanic
>modern classical, tape music

Are there any major pieces in the repetitive tape music style that aren’t primarily conceptually centered around a slow descent into the dreamless sleep of death? Maybe, but I can’t name any off the top of my head.

Anyways, this album definitely sets a mood and sticks with it. Apparently the first track was inspired by the now well-known story that as the Titanic sank, the musicians onboard continued to play their instruments, even as the freezing Atlantic was swallowing them up. This is represented in the piece by an extremely mournful looping string motif that repeats endlessly while several sonic experiments are played adjacent to it, such as soundbytes of what I’m guessing are survivors of the disaster. Cool concept, but it’s pretty tiring in excecution and it doesn’t really end up in much of a different place than it began. I can’t imagine putting it on for more than background noise in the future.

Track 2 is a less conceptually dense, but much more interesting foray into tape music experimentation. Taking a simple lo-fi recording of a tramp singing a few lines of a hymn and using it as the backbone for a modern classical composition, the orchestration is able to do some really unexpected harmonization with the limited voice sample, turning what initially sounds like out-of-tune crooning into an honest to god chord progression as guitar, harp, and a string section are layered on top of it. The track is equal parts blissful and heart-wrenching, and has enough of a dynamic progression to keep it from becoming boring, even after you’ve heard “jesus’ blood never failed me yet” what must be hundreds of times.

I’ll probably be revisiting the second half sometime in the future.

Good morning /daily/!

Drinking coffee, gonna watch all my TV series, start getting back into the Furtwangler boxset. My current goal is to finalize it and then move onto the Penguin jazz book full time. The box doesn't exclude me doing the daily album thing either. Maybe I should do Furtwangler box a weekend thing? we'll see.

Flying back to Hungary for this week today.

Love me some Minor Threat and so do a few others here. Straight edge ideology (at least in the underground music scene) is for losers and everyone who's an HxC punk dies at 20 somehow

Would highly rec seeking out grindcore starters if you dig fast-passed HC punk similar to Minor Threat.

Still working on tourney too.

>Ghost - Hypnotic Underworld (2004)

Read the comments, this is hard to pin down. The sound and influence of this album varies from track-to-track--from a Stockhausen or Cage collage on the opener to a hypnotic, groove-based spiritual jazz performance, to some sunshine pop and Eastern traditional folk. It's all here, and not necessarily eased into with transitions, either. The feeling here is almost like a Zappa record in that respect. But what a powerful energy they can evoke here at its choice moments, as in parts one and two of the title suite where the layers keep building and building in an unhinged way similar way to the work of their peers: Boris, Boredoms, Acid Mothers Temple at times. People talk about krautrock influence here in the chaotic moments, but I might say I suspect they only share common inspirations with these big krautrock bands, because this doesn't this doesn't come across as tribute in the way it might for a band like Stereolab.

Like I said, this blew me away at choice moments, but something this far-reaching and eclectic is bound to slip up at points. Disregarding all the genre hopping for a moment, the least tasteful juxtapositions are tame radio-friendly rock songs next to those long and locked-in groove-based jams, as in "Piper", a light-hearted lowlight to "Ganagmanag", a serious and subtly layered jam. There are a few odd moments like this that make it seem not only less cohesive but less serious. All that being said, I loved the highlights on this album more than just about anything from their peers.

>Expressway Yo-Yo Dieting - Undone Harmony Following
Really disappointed to say that I wasn't too into this. It didn't really have the same charm that Dormant Mirrors has, nor the same density and trippiness to it. I couldn't really get lost in it the same way. It's not bad by any means, it just let me down a bit. Sorry stick);

King Tears Bat Trip - s/t
>avant garde jazz, free jazz

Wow, this was surprisingly emotional and driving for free jazz. Layered afrobeat rhythms provide a good heartbeat for these jams while saxophones do everything from triumphant themes to what I can only desribe as the sound of a dying animal but in a really good way. Had a few meandering bits where the main rhythms are broken and the saxes just kind of play freely for awhile, but generally this is some great experimental jazz that manages to sound very unique and new while still recalling influences from traditional and even bits of post rock climaxcraft.

4.0-

Big surprise Dungen - Te Det Lugnt gets a 7 from being better than decent

I liked the old school sound they went for and when they had a good idea they usually followed it through to its full extent. The main problem was that it didnt really feel memorable so I doubt i'll revisit it anytime soon. They do know good piano melodies tho MM

what should be next handsome boys?

Truss - Kymin Lea
Solid, on the industrial side but not miserable or simplistic techno with overdriven dirty basslines and plenty of metallic noises. A1 and B1 are easily better than last years collaboration with perc.

Bowie - Aladdin Sane
Aladdin Sane and Panic In Detroit are keepers, but this album just further confirms Bowie doesn't sound special to me most of the time. I find that the guitar driven sound on most tracks drowns out his voice a bit. Also bowie himself seems more restrained in his singing, isn't as playful and emotional as sometimes. Don't think I'll check out more of his stuff anytime soon, barely anything I've heard lived up to hunky dory.

Fracture - Hype Tracks
Checked it out because Spinn and Taso worked on one track, turns out it was p meh. Makin Hype Tracks is the highlight but it's nothing more than mediocre dnb crossing over into footwork territory. Lacks something tangy.

Marcel Fengler - Frantic
eh nah

>>74825186
Sure do. What's special about the steamroom recordings exactly?
>>
>>74825593
the only differences are that they're usually droney, they're all mastered in the same studio, and are all posted to his bandcamp page.

cool live show, didn't know ivy queen (pronounced eevee queen) was in the old school underground too, would be great if they didn't censor every word by reversing the audio and then giving up on censoring halfway through the recording. baby rasta & gringo comprise the other half of the recording and they are fantastic.

looks like i'll be missing the vico c movie in theaters so i guess i'll have to replace it with the daddy yankee movie, Talento de Barrio, instead. it's on youtube if you're interested.

well you fucked me right in the ass. We have no real post punk in the rock sense like mission of burma and other projects.

closest to it we have iirc and new waveish Friccion (heavily inspired by joy division and depeche mode), then our one and only -wave era band, Los Encargados (really good shit desu).

aahh shit we have an internationally reknowned dude. can't remember his name. had an intentional typo in his name

found it, Reynols, brainchild of Anla Courtis, dude has +25 years of avant garde music, including electronic and tape remixing.

wtf this came out two weeks ago i'm way behind
after the break with the naming scheme i expected a stylistic one to go with it but so far it's roughly the same later-dillinger they've been doing, just a bit more post-rocky, less of the harsch contrast that defined them, still p fresh tho, probably top 10 of the year.

Michael Gordon & Icebreaker - Trance
Minimalist piece played by an ensemble of classical instruments (lots of winds which is always a plus) joined by electric guitar, bass and keyboards, n some sounds whose origin im not sure of. Very rhytmically varied, lots of repetition but also buildup, introducing new themes and instruments. Guitar parts have a no-wave roughness to them. I could draw some comparisions to branca and maybe stetson, even "kel valhaal covered by primus" (transgod) so you know its intense and often LOUD. Sicc stuff

>>74838175
no to all of those, I went with acclaimed stuff
idk about industrial bowie
i''ll try it sometime, which one of those three do you like the most?
>>
>>74839186
Reality is the accessible one, I listened to it the most but I probably like Heathen better of those three.

Other alternate picks could be Let's Dance (people shit on it because it's his first 80s album but it's fun and danceable af), Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) and Earthling (Bowie doing jungle, quite a thing to behold).

Dopethrone sucks ass good call
Live at Primavera Sound seems like one of those albums that's actually unoriginal but it's presented to a crowd unfamiliar with what it's ripping off. ykno like Fuck Buttons. i'm not familiar with what it's ripping off tho

>layering synths and progression is now trance
Guess progressive electronic is just trance then :^)

But srsly I can't see the comparison, FB is closer to noise rock and electro-industrial most of the time. Even on the poppier songs.
>>
>>74839888
what if trance is just progressive electronic with a flour for on the beat
>electro-industrial
hmm might be an influence on Street Horrrsing, i can see that
it'd have to be rock to be noise rock tho, and it's too structured to be noise

i've seen them called neopsych or post-rock too which is even further off imo
>any kind of buildup is now post-rock
>layering synths is now psychedelia because Person Pitch did it when they broke out
>>
>>74840036
Not saying they're any of those things but slow focus has some striking similarity to, like, yerself is steam + tangerine dream at times
>>
>>74840121
im gonna have to listen to that and yerself again desu
>>
>>74840121
Slow Focus def gives TG vibes indeed. Some tracks on Tarot Sport too.

>>74840036
Some of the noise synths they use definitely aim to textures noise rock bands aim, if not noise rock, at least some sort of rhythmic noise like Terrorfakt but played down. They have various influences but they play a sound very much their own out of those.

one of those albums that's actually highly original but nothing about its presentation indicates that so to a crowd unfamiliar with what it's coming from it seems generic
