Jazz AOTY?
That's not Binker & Moses

Just put it on. I've only heard like 4 other 2017 jazz releases but this one seems p good so far.
Sounds like jazz simplified with rock concepts so far. So no, far from AOTY.
>>74764350
What rock concepts are those?
Wrong.

Snare focused grooves that reduce dynamic and rhythmic variety. Rock/pop style repetition of certain phrases. The general sound of at least the first track comes off as like a Dream Theater style prog instrumental section than jazz to me with how it incorporates various time signatures.

Any recommendations and your personal contenders perhaps?

nah, it's just ok. the one hip hop influenced track is corny as hell. Vijay Iyer is just a corny dude in general. he's the spelling bee champion of jazz
>>74764774
lol wat
Nah, I got you covered though.
>>74764394
dude lmao
>>74764774
You only listened to the first track didn't you?
>>74764990
Not gonna lie, I haven't listened to much this year, but I like Visiting Texture, Ancestral Memories, and UNFOLD.
I can share links for the first two as well if anyone else wants them.

It's what I got out of the first track. Kinda annoying to me that a pianist with Iyer's talent would go in a direction like this where there's no creative usage of said talent.
>>74765409
Yup. Turned me off honestly. Actual jazz rock is more interesting than what I listened to. Maybe I'll revisit it later on maybe, but not right now.

>corny
What makes this any better than The Epic?
>>74765525
Blue Mountain from Unfold is so fucking good. More jazz like that (aside from Necks ofc)?
>>74766170
Creative, varied compositions
Adventurous solos that don't rely on repeated licks
A flexible rhythm section that can move beyond basic swing/rock grooves
Acceptable mixing that highlights musicianship
Appropriate length and less filler
Really I can't see any way of looking at it where the epic comes out ahead
