I didn't like Beat Happening until I got really pissed off for a lot of reasons and then it clicked which sounds backwards but that's the order those two things happened in

Beat Happening was a punk rock band. They played punk rock shows for punk rock audiences (who largely hated them but that doesn't change the intent of the music or the musicians). They rebelled by rejecting the machismo and embracing the wussiness, which sounds lame but evidently still resonates with your rebellious side.
