The week that saved rock music
>>
Qotsa and War on Drugs are garbage tho
>>
>>74756205
QOTSA I could see the argument for

But if you have any appreciation for gorgeously well layered, arranged and constructed music then you know WoD is a real achievement
>>
>>74756219
That album's nothing more than a glib facsimile.
>>
>>74756242
>facsimile
What is it a copy of exactly?
>>
>>74756242
It wears it's influences for sure. But not every good album has to be ground breakingly original. It's heartfelt and emotional, and as I said, the whole thing just SOUNDS gorgeous. It's a great album.
>>
>>74756265
They couldn't appreciate Currents either for that reason
>>
>>74756280
Yeah, I don't get why people just saying "sounds like ____" isn't really a valid criticism, unless you go on to say that the rip off is so blatant that it becomes distracting for the listener. Every artist has influences, every artist listens to others and learns from others. Nothing exists entirely in its own bubble, instead everything takes incremental steps forward for change.

Currents took 80s dance pop and filtered through a gorgeous, psychedelic lens. But people will just go "OH SOUNDS LIKE PRINCE" and completely dismiss it, despite the fact that Prince never did anything remotely as psychedelic as most of the stuff on Currents.

Same with the War on Drugs. People just love to point to Springsteen and just rest their case, as if the heartland rock influence completely makes the case that the band should be discarded. It doesn't. The War on Drugs takes that heartland sound and filters it through some of the most shimmering, immaculate, gorgeous dream pop ever laid to tape. Yes, it sounds a little like some of Red House Painters or even Sun Kil Moon's early stuff, but none of that was ever as ornate and intricate as the new War on Drugs record.

And what's more, it just sounds fucking good. The songwriting is solid, with emotional chord changes and lyrics that can instil a vague wistful feeling in the listener. instruments pop in and out, building on each other, everything ebbing and flowing completely naturally and organically, all covered in a shimmering dreamy haze while NEVER becoming cluttered or messy.

Yes, there is an appeal from hearing something that sounds like it comes from a creative vacuum, like Tim Buckley's Starsailor. But not all good music needs to rely on the shock of being very unique. Some can just rely on being good fucking music and the sooner the avant-teens on this board recognize that the better off we will all be.

None of these is best album or the week
>>
villains is nowhere close to being as good as the other two
>>
>>74756205
If you think qotsa is bad, you just have bad taste in music. All there is to it.
>>
they are all mediocre.
rock is still dead as fuck
>>
>>74756722
>I'm a contrarian faggot

wow thanks for letting us all know
>>
>>74756194
Brand New has always been shit, Villains is probably going to be QOTSA's first bad album, and who gives a fuck about WoD?
>>
>>74756827
Have you listened to it yet? Villains of Circumstance is probably one of their best songs.

Is the production awful like it is on the singles?
>>
>>74756854
I downloaded a FLAC copy and it sounds pretty good to me.
>>
>>74756854
Of the main complaints I've seen on RYM, the production being described as "flat" is one of them.
>>
>>74756851
haha imagine being that guy and reading this and youre like reading "imagine being this guy" but youre that guy,. hahaha and hes reading this too probably. what a weird thing to exist as.
>>
>>74756854
>>74756879
If you go between like clockwork and villains songs, villains is NOTICEABLY quiter and softer sounding. The songs are solid for sure, but I'm not crazy about the work ronson did.
>>
>>74756846
I don't know anyone who cares about WoD and Villains has a 3.14 avg on RYM right now. How am I a contrarian exactly?
>>74756869
>>74756879
I mean, does it sound like The Strokes/plastic indie production?
>>74756850
BN is literally the most generic unremarkable """emo""" band on the planet and this new album is by far their worst. It sounds like if The Antlers were really into late 90s radio alt-rock.

Projection
>>
>>74756971
At least listen to something for yourself before you form an opinion on it my dude.
>>
>>74756971
you should be publicly hung and the have your suspended lifeless corpse shot at by a fucking firing squad and then you should be removed from the noose and whatever is left of your body should be gut like a fish and then your entrails should be used to suffocate each of your immediate family members individually as they're forcibly and aggressively restrained
>>
>>74756971
>i have to follow the rym hivemind
no thanks i would rather not be controlled by other peoples opinions
>>
>>74756971
I mean it was at like 3.00 around the leak and it's still only got about 350~ ratings but it is going up, if thats so important to you.

But what happened to this little thing called "listening for yourself and forming your own opinion?"

Like I think the reason you are getting so much shit right now is the way you just obnoxiously barged in here with your trip on and made a bunch of contrarian ass statements with no justification, and completely dismissed the new QOTSA album without having even heard it. Pretty fucking obnoxious dude. I hope you aren't this big of a faggot in real life.

I didn't state an opinion on it or claim to have an opinion. The singles just have me hesitant to listen to it. Why are you all autistic?
>>
>>74756927
Some songs sound like that but I think that was a stylistic chance. A lot of songs sound great though like Fortress, Un-Reborn Again, and Villains of Circumstance to name a few. Really, I find the singles to be the only songs that have that "flat" sound and even those sound better on the actual release.
>>
>>74757048
You're talking shit on an album you've never listened to?
>>
Fortress is probably the sweetest, most sincere song Homme has ever written. it's not abstract or particularly poetic, it's just a sweet loving tune. Im thinking it's for his kiddo.

Nah its all good, I was just saying give it a listen first. I was worried too. The way you used to do is still by far imo the worst on the release. Wasn't crazy about it when it was released and I'm not crazy about it now. But I do like the album. Probably slots in above era vulgaris and lullabies for me.

Where in any of those posts did I say that Villains is shit? Is 4chan's reading comprehension this awful?
>>
I'm liking villains but while listening to it, is anybody else getting weird flashbacks of not only melodies from like clockwork, but other artists? I can't quite put my finger on it, some of the lyrical word play sounds like songs I've heard before.
>>
>>74757141
Umm who said you said it was shit? We were just calling you out for dismissing it so quickly, and not having an open mind. Don't put words in our mouths.

>>74757149
I agree - This is the first QOTSA album I have thought of other artists while listening to.. But then again, it might be because I just can't locate too much of their original sounds in there.
>>
>>74757156
I'm not putting words in anyone's mouths. I was literally just asking if it sounds like shit. How is that dismissing it? I still plan on listening to it. Again, reading comprehension.

Wow my reading comprehension must be really bad if I didn't pick that up hahaha

The production's okay once you get used to it. It does sound a little bit flat, but what I do like is that the bass is so prominent in the mix and you can get the groove of the songs.

Musically, I'd put it on the same tier as Era Vulgaris. Not "essential" QOTSA but a solid 7/10 with four or five standouts.

It's just a bit sad man you know? And honestly it's a bit embarrassing as well. You're gonna do what you're gonna do and I respect that but it's just kind of sad man. You're throwing your life away to get hate filled (you)s on an anime image board, yknow? Just food for thought

Brand New is okay but I'm not into emo

New QotSA is probably one of their worst

And TWoD is really just really slow, lethargic, and less gripping version of what's already medicore pop music. Even the best song on that album is just at the root really bland and slow pop, but it's bland and slow for a shameful eleven minutes.

>>74756427
You're right that people are dumb for saying "it isn't anything new" is hardly a critisism but

>takes that heartland sound and filters it through some of the most shimmering, immaculate, gorgeous dream pop ever laid to tape
>Yes, it sounds a little like some of Red House Painters or even Sun Kil Moon's early stuff, but none of that was ever as ornate and intricate as the new War on Drugs record
>it just sounds fucking good
>The songwriting is solid, with emotional chord changes and lyrics that can instil a vague wistful feeling in the listener
>everything ebbing and flowing completely naturally and organically, all covered in a shimmering dreamy haze while NEVER becoming cluttered or messy

I mean fucking c'mon lmao. Everyone replying to this (mostly you probably) is retarded. Even the p4k review for it was better. TWoD is just barely a step above generic ass Wilco-esque indie rock
>>
>>74763425

>>
Actually new U2 album this year will save Rock N Roll... Though I bet Liam Gallagher thinks he wik War on Drugs are just Springsteen after hitting the bong
>>
>>74763568
he literally just says "it's good" in 10 different ways very little of which was exclusive to the music or really music in general. Slamming an album with what are essentially aesthetic and amusical descriptors like shimmering (used twice) and immaculate serve only to reaffirm those who like it, and not to actually describe the pieces or say what exactly the music is or sounds like. Yes, it has chord changes, and, yes, it has songwriting, but what is inherently likable about them other than "I like it"? That analysis doesn't answer that question.

Knowledge about musical terms/theory isn't essential to enjoying music, but it is to reviewing it, which is really made clear in that "review". If you can't do this, you at least need to be original or hide your knowledge in some sort of wit.

Problem was with the review, not the quality of the music.
>>
>>74760627
>good artists borrow great artists steal

since you dont create any kind of music ill tell you a secret pal, you sound like who you listen to.

theres a reason coltrane was a better player than parker. its because he got to listen to parker, and copy some of his stylings.

nothing exists in a vaccum and just because something sounds like something else doesnt devalue it.

it would actually be impossible to create entirely original music.

>Yes, it has chord changes, and, yes, it has songwriting, but what is inherently likable about them other than "I like it"?
there's no such thing as inherently likable characteristics.
you're just taking his explanations on why he thinks it's good and boiling it down to "he's just saying it's good" even though he fucking explaining why he likes it. obviously if he liked the album he's going to say he liked the album you faggot. no one is going to be neutral in a fucking review, there's no point to that.
>Knowledge about musical terms/theory isn't essential to enjoying music, but it is to reviewing it, which is really made clear in that "review". If you can't do this, you at least need to be original or hide your knowledge in some sort of wit.
fuck off
even if you genuinely believe his review is shit it's miles better than your sorry excuse for an analysis
>"dude it's just slowed down pop music lmao"

Brand new was never good.

Villians is lackluster

TWoD is also GOAT live. In terms of raw musical talent, he's easily up there with the best rockers of the 70's and 80's. His albums are really hit or miss for me, but I can totally appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into them.

>>74756280
Don't drag down TWoD by comparing it to Currents. Currents is nothing better than pleasant-sounding background noise for the gym or pumping-and-dumping some Tinder match.
>>
>>74761879
yeah Im not digging Homme's social commentary. how do you not become extremely redpilled after your best friends band that you also play in gets shot at by Muslim extremists? how is Jesse Hughes not blackpilled as fuck?

I'm just saying he's saying amusical words to describe music in a way that just says "it's good" for about two paragraphs. "It's good" would honestly have been a miles better review.

>>"dude it's just slowed down pop music lmao"
but this is a valid point. There's nothing wrong with pop, but refusal to accept that what you like is pretty much just pop music creates a unwarented pretentious aura in the indie-sphere. All I'm saying is there isn't much distancing it from run-of-the-mill pop except for being elongated.

>>74763977
>you don't like an album therefore you are full of yourself
imagine being this angry that someone doesn't like generic indie rock

>I'm just saying he's saying amusical words to describe music in a way that just says "it's good" for about two paragraphs. "It's good" would honestly have been a miles better review.
so his review is bad because he's not using the words you want to? give me a break. he does a great job of describing the music while adding why it's so good to him.
>but this is a valid point
no it fucking isn't. you shitty analysis does a terrible job of describing the music (you could be talking about vaporwave for all I know) and is just you using pop as a pejorative to say "I don't like it". you took a misleading and overly-summarized characteristic of the music (it's just slowed down pop) and used it to trash the album, which is the most dishonest and lazy way to review I could think of.
btw, that guy isn't saying you're full of yourself because you don't like an album, he saying you're full of yourself because you're trying to pass off your laughable review as legitimate while trashing someone else's review because you disagree with it
I never listened to War On Drugs btw

>>74756929
wow is gaben ok? he seems to have lost a lot of weight
>>
>>74766678
>he does a great job of describing the music
how would you know if you've never heard it?

>and is just you using pop as a pejorative to say "I don't like it"
I clearly did not use pop as a pejorative (assuming you know what that means?) see from >>74766067 where I say:
>There's nothing wrong with pop

If you had actually read what I posted you'd know I said it was just /worse/ than pop music due to it being lethargic and less gripping. Re-read my original post to see this.

>btw, that guy isn't saying you're full of yourself because you don't like an album
he literally is though. He said that you need to have made better art in order for your criticism to be valid. Then said I was full of myself for not liking beer commercial band #392

exiting this shitty thread. Only good albums released this month were Black Ken and Luv is Rage 2

indie is dead but unfortunate that it was ever alive
>>
>>74767032
>how would you know if you've never heard it?
that's my point you fucking retard. he does a great job of selling the album for someone who doesn't know what it sounds like (which is exactly the point of a review)
>I clearly did not use pop as a pejorative
but you fucking did, and retconned it later to fit your argument. in the context of your shitty review, you're using pop among other negative adjectives to clearly dismiss the music
>(assuming you know what that means?)
nice projection buddy. did you have to google "pejorative"? it's okay, no judging.
>he literally is though
no, he's comparing your pretentiousness to the pretentiousness of a music artist who thinks their music is "so superior" when it's, in fact, shit. you'd know that if you didn't have the reading comprehension of a 3 year old

just kys already
>>
>>74767250
If I were saying all pop music was bad, why would I feel the need to say "mediocre" as a descriptor? I was moreso refering to heartland rock being bad than all of pop/rock music.
>>
Brand New is buttrock what are y'all smoking
>>
>>74767494
because pop is used as a pejorative very frequently in this board. with that context in mind, the usage of "pop" in your analysis, combined with the whole negative tone of it, implies you dislike pop and is using it to talk down on the album
you can also use more than one negative adjective to describe something, so using "mediocre" doesn't rule out your usage of pop as a negative when you could be using it for emphasis
you could have just said "music" rather than pop, but you didn't
>>
Brand New is so average it's hilarious. Haven't heard the other two.
>>
>>74756205
Exactly. Fuck qotsa.
>>
>>74767582
Literally retarded. Just because I describe one album as a medicore album from a genre doesn't mean I hate the whole genre lmao. TWoD is very medicore pop but I like Kate Bush, They Might Be Giants, and Mercury Rev, so saying that would just be factually wrong.

His review is very mediocre too. Don't get why you're so passionate about it unless you're samefagging (and given the other replied to that review, that's probably the case).
>>
>>74756242
hows your SAT vocab coming along?

>Just because I describe one album as a medicore album from a genre doesn't mean I hate the whole genre
did you read my post? I don't care if you like pop or not, that's not the impression you initially gave with you're review.
>Don't get why you're so passionate about it unless you're samefagging
>everyone who disagrees with me is a samefag
Literally retarded.
