It lives on in the psych and Stoner/doom/70s hard rock revival scenes that have formed around the country. There is some indie rock scattered in there too, but thanks to mac demacro it's pretty much dead too. The garage rock/burger records thing was probably the closest it got to coming back, but that has mostly come to a grinding halt now that the magic of listening to records purposely recorded like shit has finally wore off. And now punk is about having as many transgender or female band mates instead of writing actual songs. Though, there are some exceptions to this.
