Anons, make sure to go buy Paramore's latest album, After Laughter, a New Wave-influenced Pop Rock masterpiece that includes hits such as "Hard Times" and "Told You So", deep cuts like "Grudges" and "Idle Worship", and even Paramore's most experimental material yet with the track, "No Friend", which incorporates Spoken Word, Neo-Psychedelia, and Post-Punk.

Hey don't forget alice glass you guys

Today, I will remind them.

Taylor Swift makes better music than Led Zeppelin did.

Compare:

https://youtu.be/e-ORhEE9VVg
Concise, better hook, better singing, better melodies, clear lyrical development and vocal /melodic layering, fun to sing along with, doesn't take the subject matter too seriously,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pPvNqOb6RA
Long-winded, nonsensical lyrics, melodramatic vocals, cheesy flutes, overly-long buildup laden with boring cymbal rides with an underwhelming payoff, eyeroll-worthy guitar solo.

Taylor Swift > Led Zeppelin

>Long Winded

>Nonsensical lyrics
bullshit
>Melodramatic vocals
Taylor Swift is the definition of Melodramatic
>Cheesy flutes
What??
> overly-long buildup laden with boring cymbal rides with an underwhelming payoff, eyeroll-worthy guitar solo.

Short attention spam eh?

>better singing
Taylor Swift is an awful singer.
>>
>>74744125
Swift really is a very very mediocre singer. She is a bland pop 'star' who will be forgotten when her looks wear off. Creating a an album on a stupid twitter feud. Lemonade has more substance than this one.
>>
>>74744078
He's quite gifted.

>>74744125
>Cant handle a long song?
I can when they're not boring and overblown. Example of a good, long, pop song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dv-ffi2hkTQ
>bullshit
Convincing retort.
>Taylor Swift is the definition of Melodramatic
This is incorrect, but in the context of Blank Space she is acting out a *parody* of how her image in the eyes of people re: her relationships exists outside of her actual self due to her music. It's melodrama made to point out that her seeming melodrama was just that. This is good, self-aware satire. Led Zep comes off as overblown because they take their melodrama seriously.
>Short attention spam eh?
Not at all.
>Taylor Swift is an awful singer.
Really sizzles the bacon, doesn't it ?
>>
IF YOU DONT WORSHIP TAYTAY GET OFF MY FUCKING BOARD

>>
>>74744328
>>74741560
>>
>>74744392
I'm willing to concede she can be melodramatic, but in the sense of being "the definition of melodrama" it's false. Just typical redditor / dadrocker / plebeian slander.

>>74744418
Neat. Your point ?
>>
>>74744479
>Neat. Your point ?
In another thread, not entirely unrelated at that.
>>74741817
>>
>>74744545
Again: your point ? We're talking about pop music (specifically pop music aimed at appealing to the widest audience possible). Where did complexity become relevant ?
>>
>>74744584
>Where did complexity become relevant ?
The intent is what's the issue. And the abundant and incessant cliches. Suicide's debut isn't exactly a musically complex record either, but we all know how that one is regarded.
>>
>>74744622
>The intent
I'll stop you right there, bud. We're getting into "authenticity" and mind-reading territory.

You're discussing radio pop. The intent is (generally) to create a song directed enough to not seem aimless but ambiguous enough to allow for self-insertion and broad empathic resonance. The "intent" is to get people to listen to it in order to sell it in order to make money. It's a product.

Criticizing a product for being an efficient product is obtuse. Don't be obtuse.
>>
>>74744736
>The intent is (generally)
I'll stop you right there, bud. We're getting into "authenticity" and mind-reading territory.

>not him btw
>>
>>74744736
>I'll stop you right there, bud.
Why? We all know this is true:
>It's a product.
Great, so don't even pretend to treat it as anything but.
>>
>>74744758
Doesn't apply. Talking about the "intent" of an individual vs. the "intent" of a business system is not comparable.

I'm describing a business system, the other poster is using magical powers to read minds from afar. See the difference ?

>>74744793
>Great, so don't even pretend to treat it as anything but.
All art is a product by definition. Radio pop is simply more efficient at making music and making those emotional connections you so awkwardly try to attribute levels of authenticity to. You are arguing a moot point.
>>
>>74744843
>Radio pop is simply more efficient at making music and making those emotional connections
By appealing to the lower common denominator. Again, we all know this is true and why do I still have a sense of you trying to glorify it?
>>
>>74743601
at least brandon announces it's him so I can just not take it seriously ever
>>
>>74744861
Lowest*
>>
>>74744861
>By appealing to the lower common denominator.
You seem to be under the impression that this is somehow less noble than swaddling your music in layers of pretense.

You are upset because there is a scientific mode of thought being applied to this form of art for the purpose of making money. I see nothing wrong with this and respect the method.

>why do I still have a sense of you trying to glorify it?
...because you're insecure ? I don't see anything wrong with skilled people making money based on their skills.
>>
>>74744911
>You are upset because there is a scientific mode of thought being applied to this form of art for the purpose of making money. I see nothing wrong with this and respect the method.
I see nothing wrong with making money either, but I can only respect Max Martin, Ralph Murphy, etc. as successful businessmen who are able to constantly deliver a product which makes a profit.
>>
>>74744967
This is somehow different from other music in your mind ?
>>
>>74744911
Taylor Swift? skilled?
most of her songs are just 4 basic chords. I don't think you can call her a skilled person.
>>
>>74744998
>This is somehow different from other music in your mind ?
Isn't it in yours too? Stop pretending.
>>
>>74745007
You are mistaking "skill in composing complex music" for the infinite other ways a musician can be skilled.

>>74745016

>>
>>74745062
>I don't draw arbitrary lines in my head for which modes of success are "authentic" or not, so...
You realize what I'm talking about perfectly well, but you're being deliberately dense. Nothing I can do about that.
>>
>>74745062
and in what way is she skilled?
She is an average singer, with average looks, probably has a whole management team behind her just like her peers so I won't appreciate her marketability.
>>
>>74745096
>You realize what I'm talking about perfectly well,
Clearly I suspect your entire way of valuing music is based on pretentious mind-reading, however because you seem completely incapable of communicating what goes on in your head (if anything at all) we have reached an impasse. Don't blame me because you can't make words good.
>>
>>74745133
Since you're baiting for a response you already expecting - is there anything different in the music of Schoenberg, Webern, Ornette Coleman as opposed to the music of Grimes, Adele and Taylor Swift for example?

>>
>>74745111
She won a grammy nine years ago and has stayed consistently relevant and profitable this entire time.

You could call it "people skill" or "persuasive skill" to remain relevant so long and create songs that so many people (correct or not) find deep and self-insertable. Or you could just call it artistic skill. Which it is.

Other than being crafted in an academic environment where the modes of success are generally different than those of a purely commercial environment? Schoenberg made music for dark corners, Taylor makes music for stadiums.

She's a great songwriter. State of Grace, Holy Ground, Forever & Always, The Story of Us, Speak Now, etc.

And even Clean (i.e. the best song in 1989) was written by her. She worked with Imogen Heap for that one but this is what she says about it:
>Heap praises the experience, but shares, "I have to be honest here and say that I ever so slightly had not done my homework on Taylor Swift but had done what I HATE others do of me, which is to pre-judge a person based on assumptions. I had assumed Taylor didn't write too much of her own music (as is the case with many young, extremely successful artists these days who sell a shed load of records), and was likely puppeteered by an aging gang of music executives."

>"Felt I wanted to share the experience, as it was a special one. I've also been reading the odd report or tweet here and there that the reason the lyrics to 'Clean' are so good is because I wrote the song with her but FOR SURE they are all hers she deserves all the credit!"

In popular music, few artists stay around long. Think of all the dadrockers like McCartney and the Stones who had multi-decade careers as relevant artists, and think of all their contemporaries like Herman's Hermits who lasted a year and a half at most.

i've mostly stopped coming to /mu/ because people feel take being "patrician" too seriously. in reality, the only real patrician is someone who can hear and enjoy most music. pic related is how i feel on /mu/ when i drop in.

similarly, a 2005 chart looks very different from a 1995 chart

>implying Disney fails when they go into dark territory
The Hunchback of Notre Dame which is arguably Disney's darkest animated film, even if it's rated G, is one of their best.

Also, it was a huge deal when Disney started making their first PG-rated animated films since The Black Cauldron and targeting them more to teenagers with movies like Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Treasure Planet, both of which are also recognized as some of Disney's best and some of their most underrated, even if both of them were huge box office bombs.

Their first venture into making PG-rated animated films, which is The Black Cauldron is their biggest bomb and is often hated by Disney fans and critics but it has a solid fandom and it's actually pretty good, desu.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Treasure Planet are two of my most favorite animated Disney films, by the way.

Hopefully, I won't derail the thread.

Grew on me fast. After the shock of the first listen, it's actually pretty damn catchy.

All of the Second Renaissance Disney films are rated PG except for Meet the Robinsons, The Princess and the Frog and Winnie-the-Pooh even if most of them still could've got a G rating back in the '90s.

And there are some dark/violent scenes in the modern Disney films that would probably get it rated PG even back in the day.

Also, Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Treasure Planet were both made in the early-2000s.
