It's hardly about talent nowadays due to such a large network of producers, writers, performers, and how simple it is to get your hands on any piece of music making software/hardware.
What we see on TV are just the front-cover for all the back end stuff that we don't see. Honestly, I think it's a personality thing. To be an artist one must also be a captivating celebrity so people can relate and easily gravitate towards.

it really doesnt matter, at the end of it the lead singer is always the most popular member because after all, he IS the front-man for all operations. having that said, if you're literally the image of the group, would you take an equal slice as the others do?
imo, that's why there aren't as many bands as there were maybe 18-20 years back. way more independent artists are making a living off bandcamp and soundcloud (RIP) because you get all the cash to yourself and don't have to worry about awkward moments when your mate criticizes your decisions in making music
