Well here's the thing.

The Smiths always make shitty, boring music with no guts that's kinda sad. The appeal comes from the fact that Morrissey is homogay and looks like Chad, which pleases ugly, nerdy teenage girls a lot. It's kind of like The Chainsmokers now but with slightly better lyrics.

The Cure is 85% boring gutless shit music but with the occasional legit goth rock song or beautiful ballad. So they have that going for them. And Robert Smith is endearingly goofy in a spooky way, he's like a red clown who took the white clown's mantle. Like Bozo trying to be Pierrot.

So really it's not so much that The Cure is particularly good, it's just that The Smiths are hack frauds.
