what is John's magnum opus?
pic not related
I like most everything he's done but pic related was clearly his peak. Still has the energy and rawness of youth with the wisdom and insight of a fully developed songwriter. Just nothing else like it.

I swear the whole nu-male thing has now flipped back around where the ones who obsess over it now seem like fedora lords of 2012 who were overly concerned with masculinity.

Don't know what to tell you, I just think the songs are so strong and self contained while still being sort of thematically bridged across the whole album. Not to mention just the charm of the recording and performances. I wish I could say it grows on you, but it was pretty immediate for me. Maybe just come back to it after a few years to see if anything new sticks out.

they're my favorite band, still love that stuff. he just didn't really start to hit that next level as a songwriter until Fullforce Galesburg
Is this an unpopular answer here?
I think Tallahassee is still the best MG album. Followed by Transcendental Youth.
Tallahassee is like a how-to in writing great songs. Small Arms Traffic is so fucking perfect.
My problem with alot of John's other records is simply the melodies. He doesn't write memorable melodies oftentimes. I couldn't memorize one song apart from a few on The Life of the World to Come, for example.
But I could sing and recite nearly every verse and chorus from Tallahassee.
