Shit nigga, this is just my thread. I've been listening to nothing but this for the past few years. I'm going to assume by Delta blues you're referring to any blues artist originating in that area. This narrows things down, though, as there just as many many great acoustic blues artists not specifically from the Delta.

Regarding the Delta, my favorite artists that I've listened to are:

Mississippi John Hurt (one of my favorite artists ever)

Charley Patton

Robert Johnson (though I prefer Patton; something about Johnson hasn't fully connected with me)

Elmore James (the blues artist closest stylistically to straight rock music, can't recommend him enough; get The Sky is Crying)

Jimmy Reed. Reed plays a slow, groovy style (lots of shuffles) of electric blues. Probably one of the few blues artists you could play at a party. Pop-friendly.

Sonny Boy Williamson and Howlin' Wolf moved to Chicago and played electric blues, but both were from the Delta. My fav is Williamson.

John Lee Hooker. More electrified blues from a Delta-originating artist. Very primal.
