What exactly defines pop music? Because i know its not just popular music, it has more than that. Merriweather Post Pavillion is not popular (at least in mainstream music) and yet it is definitely pop

Pop is mostly lowest common denominator trash and the only reason half of major pop albums get above a 5 on anyone's ratings is because they feel like pop gets a bad rap, and because of that look at it under an unnecessarily forgiving lens. Any reviewer who said that something like 1989 is an excellent album only said that because they went in with low expectations and forced themselves to ignore major flaws because they don't want to b seen as elitists. Pop has its moments, but those are mainly confined to underground artists trying to do something unique with pop. Someone like Katy Perry or Nicki Minaj can never hope to create an excellent album that will be remembered for anything beyond nostalgia and historical significance because it will never be made for anything other than money. Comparatively, less popular artists tend to make music for themselves. It's stuff they made because they love it. Modern pop can never cross the gap of emotional honesty to artistic excellence because it's all made by 20 or 30 writers without a clear vision.
