Doesn't have to be 27, but 27 is most romanticized. If you're fairly popular and die anywhere in your 20s or early 30s, you'll be remembered. After age 35 however, no one really cares unless you're a superstar like John Lennon or Elvis.

Cornell was in not one but TWO world famous bands and led a fairly successful solo career. If you're into rock music, there's no way in hell you didn't know who Chris Cornell was, even when he was alive.
