It's probably the best instrumental mainstream hip hop album ever. When gauging it's popularity it's overshadowed by less interesting more formulaic and less skilled instrumental hip hop projects. Pun intended.

Yeah you could definitely argue that much less skilled artists have more notoriety (Nujabes etc.), but I feel like it's still really well recognised, it's not as if its some forgotten gem of the genre

Nah, sample based music never peaked. It kept growing. VHS Head is by far one of the best in the game today. His main source of sound is from VHS Tapes
