As someone who thinks Laughing Stock is pretty good but not incredible, it's popular on /mu/ because it's a post rock pioneer. If it came out today it would be forgotten about really quickly but at the time it was a blend of really neat ideas that kinda inspired an evolution that led to some really great work (Talk Talk -> Bark Psychosis -> Tortoise -> Godspeed You!)
