a question for anyone who makes ambient here: what constitutes making an ambient track? is it just experimenting with sounds that I enjoy and keeping it soft or is it more complex than that?

experimenting and keeping it soft is the last thing you should do. You need to deliberately engineer sounds in the most minimal way such that the sine waves can crush a stranger. Listen to Afx's "Lichen" 100 times or so and you'll have made your first step into understanding ambient
