The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

i become a college kid tomorrow. weird.

>Portico Quartet - Knee-Deep in the North Sea
Very pleasant jazz album. It's pretty inoffensive, but does hold some interesting moments with the saxophone. I enjoyed it.
3
>Mother 2 Soundtrack
I feel bad for not finding this as amazing as so many other people say it is, but honestly I'm not so blown away by this. It's really solid for video game music, and the genre hopping is awesome, but there's only a few songs that really stuck with me. I feel like it'd help if I played the game and heard the music in context and more repetitively.
3+
>James Ferraro - NYC, Hell 3:00 AM
Much better in concept than in actual execution. What should be a beautifully dark and weird post-internet dystopian album, is really just a lackluster, underwhelming album of bland beats and atmospheres, bad singing, decent sound collages and field recordings. Unfortunately, this isn't good.
2.5

Listening to this and really liking it, is like a new wave recods with opera vocals or something like that, the vocals are pretty great, definitely a 70/100 or more, a pretty fun record.

I also listened to Renihiliation by Liturgy and was superb, i think it will be between my favorites pretty soon.

successfully moved into college, and my roommates are awesome :)
I did a lot of listening during the drive, so now it's time to dump my thoughts

Coughs - Fright is Right
>Noise rock
Crazy no-wave worship done right. These guys play all the wrong notes at precisely the right time. The vocalist sounds like a cross between Lydia Lunch and Margaret Chardiet. A few of the songs seem like throwaways, but honestly it's hard to blame them when your music is this structureless and unconventional. I wish they utilized the horns a bit better, but this is a fun album regardless.
7

Guenter Schlienz - Tape Studies
>Tape music, ambient
Although it's nothing groundbreaking, Schlienz creates wonderful soundscapes from so little. The 30-minute closing track, while still gorgeous, does get a little repetitive as there is little development throughout the track.
7

Nervous Cop - Nervous Cop
>Noise, Free improvisation
A couple cool moments but overall this is just aimless wank.
4

Nicolas Jaar - Space Is Only Noise
>"""""""""""""""'microhouse""""""""""""""""""
This is way more experimental than I expected, and this album shows off Jaar's immaculate production skills. Nothing here was particularly memorable to me, but Jaar does know how to create a mysterious and at times unsettling atmosphere like no other. I can tell this is a grower though so I'm not gonna put it down quite yet.
6

Connan Mockasin - Forever Dolphin Love
>Psychedelic pop, Neo-psychedelia
The title track is an awesome drug trip, however nothing on here even comes close to reaching the heights of the aforementioned track. Connan's vocals are grating at times, but at other times they work their way into the quirky instrumentation and click perfectly. Unfortunately his songwriting chops are weak as well which leads to a disappointing record sans the title track.

David Thomas Broughton - The Complete Guide to Insufficiency
>Avant-folk, Singer/songwriter
Long-winding folk pieces driven by repetition and experimentation. Most everything here surprisingly works; the melodies are beautiful and the "avant" portions are done tastefully. Broughton's vocals aren't good in a technical sense but they fit the melancholic tone of this album. Not usually the type of music I enjoy but I was pleasantly surprised.
7

Lightning Bolt - Wonderful Rainbow
>Noise rock
Dracula Mountain. Enough said.

I liked it quite a bit. I'm interested to see if Ed and Norma getting together will have some sort of plot relevance seeing as how the show so far has been about how the characters fundamentally haven't changed in 25 years and things are happening in cycles.

I also thought that entire log lady scene was heartbreaking and am excited to see what happens to Cooper.

Maybe dropping from the partnership with the other RR2Go! restaurants will affect Shelly, idk. I was just happy to see their plot having closure, it was sad seeing Ed still away from her all those years later.

And yeah, Jesus talk about some sad shit when Margaret called Hawk to tell him she was dying. The In Memorian just stung hard, I cried a little bit.

but you should listen to more of Parrish's tracks. these two tracks have different vibes but they're also great! the first is a bit dark and minimal and the second one has a bit of jazzy piano, so it's closer to Summertime, but it's got a mellow and sleepy vibe to it

Letov:
>Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)
It's an actual embarassment I haven't listened to a full Kate Bush album when it has the exact sound I like about 80's

whitie:
>Objekt - Ganzfeld
The influences to old-school IDM are so obvious here, and it's really cool to see this on a 2014 album. I've already got the album this is from on a chart, so now you've got me excited to hear it.

trip up:
>Duster - Irato
"duster isn't like rpgmaker lol"
>chiptune
hmm'st've

Kanzler:
>Pan Sonic - Pakoisvoima
Noisy and uncaring, with more than just a "dark" kind flavor I'd expect from industrial. Given that this is also on my wishlist, I'm wondering if I could really take more than 3 hours of an album like this.

good friend rodriguez:
>Man Man - El Azteca
Deserves to be longer. Actually reminds me of Clarence Clarity's dirty+online mixture of sound.

nyarlathot:
>Surgeon - Move
Average 90's techno. Don't mind it, don't hate it.

-------
LOSERS
-------

stick:
>Nice Face - Hard Time
It was alright. I don't think I'd enjoy a whole album of this.

Mark And:
>Lil B - I Own Swag
He really could move a little more instead of lookin like a damn preacher when rapping
and he can't sing
i know it's supposed to be funny he goes for a whole minute of not rapping at the end
I'm not feeling the memes on this

Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance
It's one of those albums to really capture the feeling of a real shithole of a city - David Thomas is one of the craziest vocalists out there, the piercing synthesizer noises and lack of tonality make it bleak and unwelcoming (yet the songs are still good enough to make you want to come back), and the lyrics have themes of mental illness and alienation. Sentimental Journey, in particular, is one of the darkest songs of its era.

Basically, it sounds like what Cleveland feels like. In a good way.

ok I rec you Your Blues
Dan Bejar takes sounds I really, truly hate and makes songs I love. Compromised of really egregiously cheap sounding synthesized arrangements, like my least favorite 1980s sounds, Your Blues has songs that absolutely go above their meager components. I think bejar used these sounds to challenge himself, to wring something beautiful out of ugly components, and succeeded wildy. It cries out for a professionally orchestrated production, but it's a little too hard to argue with as it is

Luscious arrangements and passionate playing whisk you away to scenes of Chinese nature like the kind you'd see in a painting. Absolutely gorgeous stuff imo.

Quick chart update.

Mudhoney and Sleater-Kinney projects were so much better than I was anticipating. I was thinking they were both well known simply for their influence - but they're also really solid.

DOA was cool as fuck and super intriguing overall. Not sure if I'll go back to it much but man it's got a cool atmosphere. Darker than most music I enjoyed but hey it worked.

Both John Martyn and new Gizz albums were right on the verge of being too smooth - but they both pull it off shockingly well. I guess if you throw something with psych and jazz my way I'm bound to like it.

With all the fucking east coast hip-hop I've heard throughout my life, you'd expect me to get burnt out on it. But Lords of the Underground was head-bobbing and funky with a nice group of MCs... including one who called himself Mr Funky but wasn't Lord Finesse? The producers on this thing do a great job throwing little details in when you'd last expect them which elevated it to a new level. Right when the beats started getting repetitive, a new sample pops up to shift the song in a slightly new direction. Prime hip-hop - would probably be higher if they didn't waste so much time bragging about how underground they were.

Anyway lemme know if you got more questions... I can't remember which albums I reviewed / missed last time I posted.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard With Mild High Club - Sketches of Brunswick East (2017)
>neo-psychedelia, jazz-rock

Gizz keeps up their remarkably consistent streak here, although results are more mixed than Murder of the Universe. It's a very smart move after its fast-paced, dense predecessor, occupying a much chiller, more subdued end of the spectrum. The influence from Mild High Club is palpable, it really doesn't sound like anything Gizz has ever done before. It opens very strongly with "Countdown" and "Tezeta", then it falls into background music territory. It's the least propelling, smoothest album they've ever done, and these characteristics are sometimes negatives. More often than not it's cool and enjoyable, though, so I can't fault it that much.

This was a tough decision, so only one person gets cut from here on out.

Kanzler:
>TR/ST - Shoom
I know the album this was from got a lot of hate, but I think goth and dark synthpop fit each other surprisingly well. Alfons' voice is a contrast to the glittery electronics.

good friend rodriguez:
>Honnda - Megga Millionz
PC Music meets Orange Milk? Dai Burger's voice is probably why this song sounds so grounded in mainstream pop, even when the instrumental is off the wall.

Letov:

trip up:
>New Order - Age of consent

Ok song, just not as catchy as I'd expect something like this to be. Maybe it was something like those string synth pads, but maybe I just gotta hear this in context.

nyarlathot:
>Wisely - Through Any Window
The chorus is quaint, as is the video. Didn't like the lyrics at first, but Wisely's delivery was enough upon a relisten.

Leviathan - The Tenth Sub Level of Suicide (2003)
>depressive black metal, atmospheric black metal

Decent, but super cheesy in the way that only depressive black metal can be. "Fucking Your Ghost in Chains of Ice" is really awesome, and it starts the album off on a great note, and then the quality promptly dips due to a very singular sound and a lack of original ideas. Lurker of Chalice's s/t is filled with these lovely ideas, while this is mostly mid-tempo chugging black metal through and through, it gets old. Achieves the vision it's going for well, albeit in an incredibly overwrought manner.

2.0+

Mike Seeger - True Vine (2003)
>american folk music

By far the best modern rendition of old-school american folk music. It does great justice to the musicians of yore while bringing in a laid-back singer/songwriter quality, not too far removed from the styles of guys like Michael Hurley. His yodeling is shrill and distracting, though, and it's hard to see this as little more than a glorified tech demo for a lot of old-time folk instruments. It does serve this purpose incredibly well, and it's enjoyable as hell no matter what.

3.0+

Pascal Comelade - L'argot du bruit (1998)
>tango nuevo

Tango is a genre that should come organically, so Comelade's synthesized take on the genre gives a bit of an uncanny valley vibe. The organic moments on here are incredible, beautifully flowing and giving off an effervescent sense of fun and playfulness. When Comelade drifts from this, results become a lot more mixed. His attempt is valiant, although he does minimalism quite a bit better.

Harris Newman - Accidents With Nature and Each Other (2005)
>american primitivism, avant-folk

The free-flowing beauty of american primitivsm and the experimental nature of avant-folk combined perfectly. Newman's guitar excursions are a bit repetitive, but he evokes the sound of the masters like Fahey and Kottke with ease, adding his own dark, foreboding spin to their tried and true sound. I wish there were a lot more of the tracks that combine the guitar with other instrumentation, because they're beautiful. Otherwise, pretty great.

>Brian Eno - Discreet Music
>Ambient, Classical
With the amount of negativity surrounding this album, Structures from Silence should be getting more hate than this harmless album of background bleeps. The overlapping melodies are much more active.

Maybe this is why I can't get into it as much. Structures was able to take the perfect textures with the perfectly round sounding notes and let it stretch out for 3 tracks, while Eno plays as a desert wanderer with the gentle touch of static that comes from cheap vinyl.

I actually liked Variations on Canon in D Major (the Canon that plays at graduations). It takes the originally strict piece and turns it into a genuinely romantic sound, by putting each player at a different tempo and thereby developing new harmonies.

and pseudo-conversation reviews with strawmans, topping this album's page on rym? This is why I sort by date

6/10

>John White/Gavin Bryars - Machine Music
>Minimalism
Autumn Countdown Machine sounds like it would be music for sitting in a parlor, drinking tea in suits in the midafternoon. Of course, with someone like Gavin Bryars also on this release, the music slows itself into something more like staring at a ticking clock, which could be the setting of the next piano minimalist piece, Son of Gothic Chord. Constant vinyl itches are audible on all of these tracks, because of the poor quality these vinyls were released on; whether it adds or takes away from the music is up to you.

Jew's Harp Machine uses one of the more irritating instruments of music (Jew's Harp), thankfully it's onyl 2 and a half minutes. The most minimal piece is Drinking & Hooting Machines, as blown bottles make dissonant, barely recorded pitches sound almost comforting. Gavin Bryars' "The Squirrel & The Ricketty Rackatty Bridge" is what it sounds like, 4 different ranged guitars delivering a few passages of discomfort.

Worth listening for the first two tracks.

>Jan Steele/John Cage - Voices and Instruments
>Minimalism, Jazz + Poetry

Jan Steele's A-Side starts gentle and slow; comparable to being underwater. Much like any Obscure record, the latter half of Distant Saxaphones falls apart, but the mood shift from dream-like to drugged really works. Like All Day, Rhapsody Spaniel uses jazz instrumentation to deliver monochrome soundtracks for mostly empty rooms.

The step between Steele's murky city and Cage's mystical B-side is curious, to say the least. The single accented singer on Experiences No.2 and the subsequent track isn't amazing, but ritualistic and narrative. Meanwhile, Experiences No.1 and In a Landscape convey a penchant for beauty that I don't normally hear from Cage.

Perfect for something like a dark, rainy night.

At risk of sounding like a moron is it me or do the early Beatles songs have virtually non-existent guitars? Posted outside of /daily/ for the first time in ages and got called a virgin, so I'm back.

>The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band - Part One (1967)

What a hilarious name, first of all. This is in the class of psychedelia that's admittedly quite silly from the outside but also happens to be a true, lasting document for serious enthusiasts and collectors. In that respect, there's some vague commercial pop veneer to some extremely strange ideas (or is it vice versa?). Some traditional-leaning, Velvet Underground-like tracks like "I Won't Hurt You" have something that can't be quite be described as an edge as much as a vague, sinister undercurrent, that threatens to come to fruition in the way that successful psychedelia mirrors in someway the psychedelic experience. And then there are some truly bizarre moments like "Help I'm a Rock" that need to be heard to be believed, and certainly verge on failed experiment. Then again, you hear enough of this kind of stuff and you can appreciate those moments too.

That Krome & Time single was my first real contact with breakbeat hc, I stumbled upon Manic Stampede on yt one day and fell in love with that wicked guitar sample. But Underground is the better of those tracks because the sampling on it is just awesome.

Pic related is a great comp to get into what SubBase released, it has some classics like Far Out, The Slammer (another great Krome track) and Underground on it.

Bo Diddley - Have Guitar, Will Travel (1960)
>rhythm & blues, rock & roll

Easily the best rock & roll album of all time, the pace never lets up and all the songs are absolute scorchers. The songwriting definitely isn't that sophisticated, but the sound is ripping and massively forward-thinking, as is Diddley's guitar playing. His usage of fuzz and tremolo would be forward thinking-today, let alone in 1960. I can't recommend this album enough. Even if you don't like old-school rock & roll this is still an incredible album.

Man he does TWO whole versions of "Burn & Rob" on one 50-minute solo album, and neither is as good as the version on 'What Else Do You Do?' what gives

"There's Something About A Truck (What It Is)" is worth its 9+ min playtime, but the rest is fairly short and forgettable anti-folk-type contemporary folk
