I think one needs to be able to do one or the other. There are a slew of talented composers who couldn't play an instrument and a slew of talented instrumentalists who couldn't write or compose music, but each of those present a sizable understanding of what they're doing on a fundamental level. Most with that level of understanding can do both.

Having a narrow view of art isn't inherently a bad thing. In fact, the most detrimental mentality to exist within any medium of art is that which claims anything can be art because it's an "expression of the soul" or some such bullshit. Jandek is not a musical genius. Without a gauge of quality (or what you'd call "a narrow view of art"), art possesses zero value of any kind, physical, emotional, spiritual or otherwise.
