I like when vocals are heavily effected and used as a an additional melodic or percussive element, but sometimes bad lyrics can stick out too much and ruin the song.

"All These Things That I've Done" by the Killers is incredible until it gets to the bridge. I like the composition and a similar chant would work well, but "I got soul, but I'm not a soldier" is so dumb.

This is always such a dumb point. Songwriting is fundamentally different from poetry. Sure there are similarities in how to navigate and write it, but the whole point of poetry is to communicate solely through the written word, while lyrics are deliberately written in tandem with the music, or at least with the music in mind. Like do you seriously not see how words can take on a new meaning or significance when accompanied by music? How melody and delivery can shape the tone of a line? How it provides a tangible point of association for the words, which would be absent in poetry?

I'm not even saying you have to care about lyrics, a lot of people don't, but stop saying stupid shit like that. Also, bad lyrics can absolutely break a song.

Yeah, I don't pay attention to lyrics either, as long as they sound good. Even on hip hop.

It depends on the genre, in pop and rock they're meaningless trash 90% of the time. In folk, hip hop, punk, art rock, they're incredibly important and a part of the music itself.
