Deja Entendu is good, and Devil and God is one of my favorite albums of all time. Definitely check out Devil and God, if nothing else.

Tried to get into them but they're far too try-hard edgy for me. Gave their new album a go and they've turned the try hard down and it's actually a really good record

You haven't slept for 2 days, so you're the perfect demographic for Brand New.

Seriously everyone should listen to Science Fiction though, it's album of the year material
>>
>>74669783
I agree, Science Fiction in my opinion is just as good as TDAG, from this point on it's not an easy choice to choose the best Brand New Album.

How i'd personally rank the albums

>The Devil And God 10/10
>Science Fiction 9.5/10 (Although will probablly take TDAGS position)
>Daisy 8/10
>Deja Entendu 7.5/10

I give YFW a 7 because I like the cheese of the record. Plus Soco as an album ender is fucking perfect. Moshi Moshi should have been on it tho...(or was that deja era? idk)

They're close, but Wildlife tops Stage Four imo just for instrumental diversity. Wildlife changes things up, takes new approaches to a song and story.

Stage Four (and by extension, Touche Amore is guilty of this) is really same-y imo.

Though they're both concept albums, I'm not sure which concept I like more. To be sure, both deal with extremely heavy topics. I think Jeremy's is more sincere than Wildlife is, but Wildlife really hits a part of me hard.

Idk, would love to hear your thoughts when you finish Wildlife.
>>
SF ≥ Daisy > D&G >>> Deja >> YFW
>>
>>74673100
Agree with you on the diversity.
Last half of the album from poem onwards felt really strong sonically and emotionally - tops stage four
>>
>>74673206
Oh for sure. The last half of Wildlife is god tier.

But honestly, I think from A Letter onwards is amazing. The songwriting in Safer in the Forest + The Most Beautiful Bitter Fruit is some of the best they've ever done.

>>
>>74673341
Wildlife is easily in my top 5.

It gets new life when you listen to it knowing it's a concept album. Jordan Dreyer (the singer of La Dispute) says that the album is about an author struggling against his demons and slowly degrading life. The songs in Wildlife (such as King Park, Edward Benz, I see Everything, Missionary Baptist Blues etc) are all short stories written by the author, who uses them to express his pain. Some of the songs in the album are actually written as notes in the margin to the listener, and the authors friends/family.

It's really a brilliant fucking album. Go listen to it again like this. And then listen to Hear Here, ROTH, etc. Fucking love these guys. HUGELY underrated, especially by /mu/.

There's a split in thematic elements on the album. Some songs are in the form of short stories, and some are letters/poems/notes written by the author meant to be "read" by you, the listener, and the author's imaginary friends/family.

Song like:
>A Departure
>A Letter
>A Poem
>A Broken Jar
>All Our Bruised Bodies and the Whole Heart Shrinks
>You and I in Unison

Are the author of the short stories on this album DIRECTLY communicating with the listener, with his friends and his family. That's why they're not about other people, they're about himself, and they're about the ones he loves.

The short stories on this album are:
>Harder Harmonies
>St. Paul Missionary Baptist Blues
>Edit Your Hometown
>Safer in the Forest/Love Song for Poor Michigan
>The Most Beautiful Bitter Fruit
>King Park
>Edward Benz, 27 Times
>I See Everything

IF you listen to these songs knowing that they're supposed to be short stories the author is writing to express his anguish, you'll catch him relating them back to himself in the form of notes, or some rambling. My best example of this would be in the song St. Paul Missionary Baptist Blues, when the author finishes describing the decline of the church and the guy slowly putting it back together, he asks "I wonder if there's anyone out there like that for you and me, for you and me? For anyone else who's broke and lost hope."

Or in the song Edward Benz, he breaks from the narrative of Ed getting attacked, and starts writing about other songs on the album, and how he always thinks of Ed going through what he did.

It's fucking genius.

>>74673587
Damn. Reminds me of joanna newsoms lyric writing, looking into the lyrics really gives a whole new appreciation.
This album might become top 10
>>
>>74673667
Dude, Jordan Dreyer is a lyrical genius. Just listen to this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPppInfmpvo
It's from their Hear, Here project, which is just whatever they want to throw together.
And this is from their split with Koji
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cc0qrLRD33w

And if you like La Dispute doing concept albums, give their latest record, Rooms of the House a spin. It's another concept album where the main character explores how people turn rooms of a house from "just blue prints" to a place where people live. He recounts stories and events that occurred in relation to the rooms of the house and the objects within. While they haven't reviewed it, Pitchfork believes that it deserves to be up there alongside Benji, as far as songwriting goes
http://pitchfork.com/thepitch/621-the-year-in-post-hardcore-has-the-new-wave-crested/
>It was a banner year for records weaving interconnected character studies and Rooms of the House deserves to be mentioned alongside Benji and My Krazy Life for its sheer comprehensiveness and depth.

This is among my favorite songs off ROTH

What should I listen to if I want more stuff like Brand New, outside of Modest Mouse?
>>
>>74673939
>>74673939
You're right, it is.
La Dispute didn't form under the guise of being a Post-Hardcore band. They started as a poetry reading project, that's why they almost always use spoken word lyrics (except in the case of their song 12 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qbk-xo6Zqs). Hell, their whole Hear, Here project is just them reading the poems of other people and putting it to music (except in the case of nine through 13, which is all original poetry.)

Honestly, I think they're more about making art and reciting poetry than they are about making loud and angry post-hardcore music

I liked Weatherbox a lot
Mansions, at least Dig Up the Dead and to an extent Doom Loop I love but it's not as "mature"

As an outside recommendation Hell or High Water by As Cities Burn you might like, the rest of their stuff isn't really the same vibe (though I like pretty much all of it)
>>
>>74667977
they're one of my favorite bands. its a beautiful blend of emo angst, while having a unique ambient, peaceful drone to it. devil and god does it best, daisy does it as well, though with a little more power. they do a beautiful job setting a meloncholy mood. the only complaint i can think of off the top of my head is that the lyrics are meh at times. some are really out there and deep, while others are bland. especially the beginning of the devil and god, where the chorus is just "yeah" over and over. but i love them. so much.
>>

9.5/10, will probably put this above TDAG in the future
>>
>>74675426

Personally Brand New is one of my favorite bands in general. I'd probably rate their discog like this;

TDAGARIM 10/10, Science Fiction honestly 10/10, Daisy 9.5/10, Deja 8.5-9/10 and then YFW 6-7/10 love this band and pretty much everything theyve released

YFW re-release has really good cover art

Goes nicely with rest of their discography.

The biggest weak link is how it ends.

It came out around the time Jesse had an interview that I read where he said they were leaving daisy and exploring other avenues for their music to take, specifically other ways to branch out from tdag and deja Daisy being one route they hoped to forge another one with thew new album which ended up being SF.

So i like to look at I am a Nightmare like their 3 demos ep as them revisiting their older sound and playing with it trying to find something good.

I know the stop clock is from YFW, but I like how this image actually includes Science Fiction in the form of the chess board, referring to the writing of the back of the envelope on the limited early release version that includes the dialogue from the 2001: Space Odyssey chess scene.

I'm actually a bit disappointed that that sound clip wasn't used in the album, although maybe it would've been too I'm the nose for what they were going for.

Has anyone got the links to the bonus songs from this release? I bought the record but I must have lost the songs I downloaded when I was cleaning up my library.

I had no idea Wildlife was actually this complex. I love that album but this just gives it even more weight imo.

Def a top 3 for me

I am a nightmare is a solid fun song idk what you are talking about. It's not as "deep" as devil and god but who gives a fuck, it's a single
>>
I feel like the only BN fan who doesn't like Science Fiction right now
>>
>>74683273
I got halfway through and stopped. There didn't seem to be much urgency or variety in it. Maybe when this all shakes out, SF will still be well regarded, but I doubt it will have the unanimous overwhelming praise it has in this thread

Don't come running to me when they're coming for you

Had lit me up on loop for ten minutes.. I.. I don't want to go forward.. I don't want this to be their last album. I... please..

Saw them live for free in 2003 supporting Incubus.
They were incredible.
Always been a fan of Brand New since Your Favourite Weapon... loved the pop punk sound, love the sound they've matured into.
One of the few bands to have never put out a bad record.
>>
>>74683563

Haven't made it through it once yet, keeo skipping back to the start.

Brand New was always relatable emoshit for a certain age group.

>YFW
Late middle school/early high school drama
>Deja
Coming to adulthood and living with scummy decisions
>DnG
Post college realization of wasted time
>Daisy
I'll never get why people like this album that much. It was painfully hard to relate to. I don't hate it, but it's so jarring compared to the progression before it.
>SciFi
I feel this should have come before Daisy
>>
>>74683273
>>74683394
I didn't like it at first but gave it more listens - it needs setting time, for sure, like Daisy did imo.

IDK but this is pretty good
>>
Seeing them again in November, great band Live. Seen them with Basement supporting last time in a venue for theatre shows

If you've just heard of them from the new album, I'd suggest to work backwards rather than from the beginning. Daisy is most like the new album, Devil and God is similar in a way to Daisy but is way more emo, then the rockier elements from that album transition well into listening to Deja En Tendu. Then finish off with the pop punk Your Favourite Weapon
>>
>>74685002
Shut My Eyes and Stop Torturing Me are great, still prefer the Tigers Jaw album though
>>
who /relatingtoBatterUpwaytoomuch/ here?

Can't Get it Out had some lines that hit me pretty hard too
>>
Let's be honest, Your Favorite Weapon is not a good album. Only people who grew up with it will claim it is
>>
Had listened to it before when I was just getting into music but I'd forgotten everything about it so I relistened to The Devil and God last night
It was pretty good I guess, nothing special desu but still a positive experience. Sowing Season is a legitimately great song and so is Jesus Christ but other than that I just remember thinking "yeah I'd rather be doing this than be listening to something else"
>>
>>74685623
Same. Batter Up is such a defeated song.

>>74680874
hit up sophie's floorboard

Deja Entendu has the absolutely worst album art I have ever seen. It isn't even a contest.
>>
Tommy Gun is my favorite song
>>
>>74686728
What is so bad about it
>>
>>74687933
Anything astronaut themed is pretty tacky from the get-go. Disgusting colors and textures that look like vomit, typefaces work against each other instead of together, it looks like my 8 year old cousin bought a "cool" graphic tee from pacsun or journeys. Its pseudo emotive, doesn't complement the music on the album in any way shape or form. Not to mention the people who get horrendous tattoos of the astronaut for all the sick reddit karma lelz XD
>>
>>74683394

I feel the same way. I'm relistening, but it's still not doing that much for me. I guess it's closer to Daisy than any of their previous work, and I was never huge on Daisy, either...I find both Daisy and SF okay, but I forget the tunes immediately after listening.
>>
>>74672762
La Dispute have written some of the most truly embarrassing music of all time. One of Brand New's best qualities is their self-awareness with regard to the absurd melodrama of the genre they are in. Jordan Dreyer lacks a single iota of this self-awareness and needs a good hard slap because of it.

/mu/ core alt-rock is fucking emo shit to me
