I remember reading that Zappa was part of multiple mixed cultural heritage groups, Roy Estrada was a mexican-american and Ray Collins had been in pachuco groups before the Mothers, so I think it was mostly just part of the scene they came from that was different enough from the mainstream to use with the Mothers
