Listening to June of 44 right now. What are the major math rock bands I'm missing out on? My only other contact with the genre is Slint and Rodan.

Also, explain one (1) way math rock is different from prog rock.

Don Caballero is the obvious rec, but also You Slut! and Battles; and if you're in for some heavier stuff, The Fall of Troy and Bats.

Anyhow, math rock and prog rock come from different places. Prog rock comes from psychodelic rock, while math rock comes from post-hardcore. Prog rock tends to be a lot less dissonant, longer, less agressive, and trippier; math rock is more agressive, shorter, very dissonant (at times bordering on noise rock) and a lot less trippier. Prog rock can have songs that last for 20 minutes; while math rock will hardly ever go beyond 10, and those are the exception.

Another thing - there's a heavy emphasis on polyrhythms on math rock, while prog rock tends to work a lot more on odd time signatures, but not necessarily in a polyrhythmic fashion.

Math rock is "relatively normal rock" with a focus on odd rhythms (not necessarily odd time signatures, but usually that) while prog rock uses a rock context to write sweeping multi-part epics that might happen to include odd meters.

Here's a variety of songs:

Prog rock is people who know their music theory writing stuff in odd time signatures for the fuck of it. They know all the time signatures of their music.
Math rock is people who don't know much music theory writing sporadic music and for the most part actually disregarding time signatures. They probably don't even know what time signatures they're playing in most of the time, or it's just 4/4 with an eighth or quarter note added or removed sporadically.

Prog is more learned while math rock comes from more of a punk influence.

Tera Melos, one of the most notable bands associated with math rock, actually eschew the term math rock as it implies that it's formulaic and that there's a right and wrong way of playing it, and that it's perfect and precise, which is contrary to how the music is actually written and played.

Also there tend to be two different main styles of math rock. There's the one that's mostly a clean tone and is pretty chill, which is associated with TTNG, CHON, Americ anfootball, etc. And then there's the wild noisy math rock, which Hella, Don Caballero, and Tera Melos generally fall under.

Try listening to Toe, specifically their album For Long Tomorrow.

These >>74638371 >>74637646 anons are on point but math rock usually has emphasis on technicallity while utilizing conventional elements of rock, or breaking typical conceptions of how the music would be. Math rock also has multiple elements of rock music and post-rock, prog included. Battles, for instance, might appeal more to a prog fan, while bands like Elephant Gym and Pretend might appeal to someone who is more into punk, post-hardcore, or post-rock.

Just saw Tricot last night. Recommending them if you want cute Japanese girl math-rock, plus they're really good.
