The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Some more quick updates -

Death Grips - Bottomless Pit

The last of the DG albums I hadn't heard aside from Government Plates. Super scattered compared to the rest, with moments of brilliance ("80808", "Eh", "Spikes") and... questionable moments I'll chock up to experimentation ("Hot Head", "Trash"). Wasn't expecting much considering its reputation so I won't say it's disappointing. But it's lacking something I've really loved from other DG releases that I can't pin down. I could see this being a grower though, especially given how much I liked the standouts.

3/5

SZA - CTRL

At the end of the day, this is a pretty standard R&B, with a little bit of an... alt flair. I can't say much about it is particularly inventive but the production is exactly what I like out of TDE. Little synths, keyboards and electronic elements that make it a lush, mellow listen. Lyrics are nice, production is solid and there's really no low point. SZA's voice is exactly what I like out of a female R&B singer too. Kind of reminds me of Badu for whatever reason even if it isn't quite in the same range.

Anyway, very very solid stuff.

3.5

Gong - Flying Teapot

Trippy, psychedelic prog with a lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek flair. Though it relies a little too much on this humorous approach, the instrumentation is pretty amazing and more than makes up for it.

The more I listen to prog, the more I start to realize what style I like. I either dig something in this vein with psych flair or a clean cut, semi-jazzy approach of Caravan or Camel. This is a prime example of the psych prog I like and it's something I'm sure to come back to very soon.

The Kinks - Face to Face (1966)
>pop rock, mod

The halfway point between garagey mod and flouncy, overtly British baroque pop. Fourteen songs stretched over forty minutes makes for some tracks that go absolutely nowhere, especially on the a-side. Despite generally liking the Kinks, their psych/baroque pop is twee to a fault, and the prevalence of these dainty, flouncy songs nearly sinks the a-side. It does start off strong, with the effortless "Party Line", and the b-side is way more consistent, despite having an obvious best track in "Sunny Afternoon". I oughta dig more into these guys.

Rafael Lechowski & Glaç - Donde duele, inspira (2007-2011) (2011)
>jazz rap, conscious hip hop

Not a jazz rap album in the Digable Planets/A Tribe Called Quest way, this is literally just a jazz album with some rapping over it. I can't really speak much about the rapping, considering it's in Spanish, but the dude has good flow despite not fitting terribly well over the instrumentals. The instrumentals are the album's strongest suit, it's occasionally too easy listening for my tastes, but it's composed very well and it doesn't forget to add some tasteful hip hop sensibilities without compromising its unique take on jazz.

>Keith Fullerton Whitman - Disingenuity / Disingenuousness
>Drone, Noise
From what I'm reading, this seems to be recording every mechanical action from a mono nagra tape machine, and not just the found field-recordings being played themselves, and re-interpreting them with analogue electronics that would typically be used to produce music.

The result is what you'd expect-- alien construction with the most minimal traces of human life, such as 7 minutes into Disingenuity where children can be heard before it turns into gurgling noise. The second track is much more enjoyable, coming more from techno than sound collage. Static drums tap beneath twitching analogue tones and lower synth waves, before relaxing into the ambiance of a 70's space ship.

7/10

>Black Sites - Unit 2669
>Industrial/Acid Techno
Two tracks, both with long buildups. First one didn't really reach a peak, but the supposed tape manipulation on the second track was much more interesting, much more ambient than beat-driven. Overall, mostly aimless.

5/10

>Pan Daijing - A Satin Sight
>Industrial, EBM/Power noise
This actually wasn't released on PAN, their most recent album was. After the standard speaker-busting of Tenderloin Tanz, Exile's melody reminds me of the harmony of the original Legend of Zelda's dungeon theme.

I think what holds Pan Daijing back is how it feels like their music should have more impact or be noisier, but it sits right behind the threshold that would make it that way. It's more consumable, but also mundane.

Oren Ambarchi - Suspension (2001)
>ambient, drone

Really cool bass-driven ambient. I can't say I've heard an ambient album like this before, mostly periods of silence interspersed with very percussive bass and guitar noises. Ambarchi's only really got one shtick here, but it's one that works incredibly well, every droning note hits like a sack of bricks.

Blacksheep - blacksheep (2008)
>chamber jazz, avant-garde jazz

An incredibly interesting take on jazz, to say the least. Pianos and horns swirl around creating some of the most cacophonous, seemingly structureless jazz around, allowing the album to slowly reveal its more complex layers. I can't deny that some of this is quite a bit structureless, but there's a large amount of compositional tact and genius beyond this outside layer, and the odd combination of instruments along with the album's incredible control of dynamics is enthralling to listen to.

At the tail end of my first two day hangover. I'm getting old boys.
Haven't had much time to listen to music this week; I'm all officially moved in with the missus however, and the wedding went well. Found a little lake by the chapel that had a little boat sitting in it, we jumped in and floated around while smoking a few j's. It's been a good week.
Music for this feel?

oh yeah for sure that jimbo performance is leg end dairy, real stunner

btw do you know of any jimbo professional, or at least professional sounding, live recordings? the majority of them are too poorly recorded for me to want to listen to them over the studio versions unless its an unreleased song. his peel session is really nicely done as well as that performance of fast car.

well, I'm Happy, I'm Singing, and a 1, 2, 3, 4 is technically a live album, and he's got a lot of other live, experimental stuff. mostly with haino or ambarchi. there are really no professional-ish live recordings of his poppy stuff outside of the 3 semi well known ones (6/27/2000, 9/16/2002, and the peel sessions) though, as far as i know.

these are al cool though: http://www.stereogum.com/1867485/watch-a-rare-jim-orourke-full-band-performance-in-tokyo/video/

I could never get into Doolittle, then the Pixies are a band that from my perspective have aged terribly given how banal their dynamic comes across today compared to how fresh it would have been at its time. Still, "Debaser" and "Monkey Gone To Heaven" are great tracks. I'd recommend watching the film Un Chien Andalou for context on the former, its only around 25~ minutes and is ranked on Sight & Sound's Director's Top 100 Films.

On another note Weezer's "blue album" is also an album which I find rather bland though I do quite like the transition from the more peaceful "The World Has Turned and Left Me Here" to the combative Buddy Holly that comes on with immediate fuzz and a relatively harsh-sounding progression of power chords. That being said the album isn't much aside from that track really. Feel free to mock me. Also Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix whilst I haven't listened to it in a long time is ridiculously catchy, still remember most of the lyrics though it can burn out on you fast given how formulaic and upbeat all of the songs are.

Sat on this for days trying to figure out what to write, and still couldn't do it right.

>Bill Orcutt - Bill Orcutt (2017)

What do I think about this? I think it's occasionally very ugly and pulls off this never-played-guitar-before feeling, true to the American Primitive nature, as his technique here is technically quite basic. Then again, I think it's all missing the point to use any of that as criticism, as it seems to be more about this juxtaposition between the dissonance and moments of clarity that shine through. I think style is most notable here, as it's in a much different vein than those guys you know that play acoustic guitar. Bill Orcutt's style is more in line with Derek Bailey's solo free improvisations with its daring and confident, jerky and never gentle moves, and occasionslaught disdain for traditional scales. I couldn't help but wonder what it might sound like without all the distortion and reverb on an acoustic guitar, but I decided that's missing the point too.
7/10

Seems like every year I'm saying how not much was great and deciding which "pretty good" album was AOTY. Wrong generation guy here.

Voiski - A Culture To Trash
It does have a certain sense of style about it, well it should have something, being Voiski's most notable release. It combines ambient and techno elements and honestly techno ones could be a little bit less soft (while ambient is alright). Still, for me it's something I don't mind existing rather than anything particularly interesting.

Youth Code - A Place To Stand
If the whole piece doesn't really reek of queer liberalism, there's "A Litany" to do the job. While I don't really mind music being a statement, it's not really great when it's not much else. I suppose I should be intrigued by the unique androgynous vocals in mosh ebm. I'm not.

Akitsa - Auprès de la mort, triomphant!
The most amount of work was obviously put in the first track, yet it still sound kinda boring and cliché. The second one could've been something interesting, were it more complex and stylized. This whole raw image doesn't work for it at all. The third one is supposed to be Burzum~ish ambient. It does the job, but it doesn't really do much else.

Good-day /mu/, tried the following;

>The Cars - Panorama. It was okay.
>Maudlin of the Well - Bath. This is frankly the greatest metal album that I have heard so far, the dark ambient intro of The Blue Ghost in many ways reminds me of Bark Psychosis' Hex though gradually diminishes this comparison with the lead guitar becoming unmuted, reaching a grand peak like that of Mt. Elbrus. This then turns into some sludgy metal tracks with deep vocals that immediately contrast with the tone set before alongside some seemingly atonal power chords. Love this thing.
>Sweet Trip - Halica: Bliss Out v.11. Was surprised to see the title of this record, having recognized another band that I quite appreciate having also made a volume in this series. Really chill album that generally flows like the cyan water down a Galapagosian river.
>Sweet Trip - velocity:design:comfort. This isn't as abrasive as I was expecting though still is one of the most intense albums of its kind that I've listened to thus far, the manner in which the pellucid dance rhythms bend into the occasional glitch segments and "shoegaze" elements put forward on this album make it stand out significantly from the competition. Still, I need to give this numerous more listens

Also I absolutely love Beautiful Blue Sky, that track alone makes Ought worth listening to, its a shame the outro seems forced and should really have only lasted 30 seconds to a minute, everything aside its brilliant.

so, i realize this is just a daily thread, and more than likely nobody's going to give a shit, but i just gotta throw out a thanks to everyone here. it's been a year since i started lurking on /mu/ and i have uncovered a wonderful persisting interest in music in myself that has helped me through some hard times.

pic related. this is not even close to the amount of music i've heard on this board, but i tried to be honest with myself, not strictly adhere to the more "patrician" picks, and choose what my favorite listening experiences were over the past year. so yeah, a lot of it is mu-core, but it's what i truthfully liked the most.

my god why do newfags always feel the need to justify their taste like that? no one actually gives a shit if you're a poser or a patrician or a pleb whatever or not jfc, and if they do, they should just learn to deal with it

Hey guys newfag here,

saw Berlin school mentioned; I've really been enjoying Steve Hauschildt's Tragedy and Geometry which I've seen described as Berlin school. Any recommendations for further listening?
>>
>>74671972
Berlin School is a pretty broad brush, but it does refer to a time and place as much as a style

I'm not sure I'd call Steve Hauschildt's thing Berlin School, unless he's deliberately imitating sounds and techniques of the era. And I've only heard one Emeralds album, so idk

Anyway, would rec Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, and Manuel Göttsching (if he counts)
>>
>>74671972
If Tragedy and Geometry is more rock-oriented, try Faust or Ash Ra Temple or something

Faust I and IV in particular are spectacular

Oh yes nigga

I actually got a huge list of Berlin school from a guy I met randomly in a different thread. I don't have the full list but here's some of their picks:
https://rateyourmusic.com/collection/sequencejacob/strm_h,ss.rd/Progressive%20electronic
Most of them are older and aren't as clean sounding as Hauschildt, but still enjoyable

My favorites are more of 2000's releases than anything, but here's some stuff I like that were more Progressive Synth based
>Mark Pritchard - Under the Sun
>Panabrite - The Baroque Atrium
>Ashra - New Age of Earth
>Marc Romboy - Voyage de la planète
>Joseph Bastardo - deCordova
>Nico Niquo - Epitaph
>Claude Speeed - Infinity Ultra
>Alessandro Cortini - Risveglio
>Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith - Ears
>Dialect - Gowanus Drifts
>Konx-om-Pax - Caramel
>1991 - High Tech High Life

Replica was pretty enjoyable. Ambient's not reeeallly my thing so if I'm going to listen to it I'll want it to have some glitchy aspects, which this delivered, and if it's got variety via shorter pieces, that's in its favor too. 3.5+

The departure of most of the members since their last album On land and in the Sea (1989) make Tim searched for a new sound, which was not very well recibed in the new album Heaven Born And Ever Bright (1992) with the two new members, Jon Poole on guitars and Bob Leith on drums, Tim starts looking once again for a way to replace their keyboards and saxophones that in this time are not the main focus of the music for create a new bombastic, blastful and excesive sound, the band succeded creating a more guitar focused record, an operatic wall of sound that surpasses in quality any of the production styles made for earlier albums of the band, the guitar-esque pop arranged with the rest of influences that the band managed to incorporate make sound the record like a art punk / experimental rock album, the production style along with the superb compositions make of this album one the best albums that have been or ever will made.
