GAS, Stars of the Lid, early Tim Hecker, maybe some Ryuichi. Huerco S comes to mind.
Rothko's work has always felt monolithic and "big" to me

Some Free Jazz band/artist/album/composition. They were contemporaneous and the one does actually look like the other sounds.

Rothko fits well with a lot of ambient and drone, naturally. Despite this association of mine, I recently read the top book on him, and Rothko personally doesn't seem to have been into much modern music, preferring instead maybe some classical. He was plenty /lit/ though, and he had a greek thing running through his art - the middle period before he went Full Rectangle is full of freakish chimera-creatures which are abstractions of Greek myth.
