how could I fix the mixing on this?
https://clyp.it/ivbxiqze
>>
>>74612861
doesn't sound too shit to me, my man.

maybe lower the piano a good 5-10% or so, bring up the bells and hats. the stereo hat is sort of awkward to me, but if that's how you like it, more power to you. the bass is fine. the kick is appropriately punchy, maybe a little overpresent. i'd bring up the snare a little.
>>
https://clyp.it/zwv3kqy4

I've tried to implement some suggestions on the mix from the last thread. How's this sounding?
>>
>>74613186
thank you.didn't think anybody would respond. Anyway, ill definitely do that.
>>
>>74613217
synths overused and the groove feels very off between the synth and kick

try switching things up and add more to it. song's a decent idea but the arrangement sucks

>>74613186
>>74612861
spot on, agreed on everything except i don't think the kick is "overpresent"

polyrythm melody
https://clyp.it/hhwufwpu
anyone have an idea on how to add appropriate drums to this?
>>
>>74613588
assuming this is in 5/4, a good rhythm for this would be a kick on 1 and 5, and a snare on 4, with your choice of hats, probably simply on beat is the best.
>>
>https://clyp.it/vc4e2ewq#

repost from last thread, would really like some opinions on this
I think the tempo might be a little bit too slow, maybe also add the snappy bit of the kick to every sample instead of only once every bar?

Best way to mic a melodica?
>>
>>74614987
maybe a shaker in there

definitely quicken it a touch, and make the kick snappier. sidechain the synth harder

>>74615231
lol have you even tried it yet
>>
>>74614987
>https://clyp.it/vc4e2ewq#
I think you kinda ruined the vibe by going from a 4/4 rhythm to something that was heavy on the 1 and 3 so abruptly. Also I don't think the hat groove is doing the beat any favors towards the end there. I wanted to hear a 4/4 percussion or hat thing going on underneath the rest of the track.

I'm running into this issue too. What you have to do is basically teach him how all this shit works. they need to have patience and stick with it so that you can actually make something. I have a friend who does vocals and I use Renoise and it's been so annoying to try and teach him what I've been doing. Especially once you through in synthesizer recording. I hate working with inexperienced people because it starts to not be fun and not a collaboration.

metal, been posted before, but I'm trying to work on bass guitar production so what do you think?

so far two DI bas signals, one high passed, one low passed, low end compressed, VST on high end for growl. Blended together and multiband compressor on group to control the lows. Bass ducked about -1.5 decibles.

I have never been happy with any bass I have recorded, but I think it's getting close.

Get drum samples from real drums there are a ton online. Programm your standard pattern. Insert ghost notes where nothing is (low vel hits on off bets) to get this groovy feel.
Find out how to emulate rodes/Bass in FL. Otherwise Native Instruments has quite good samples for Kontakt.

The difficult Part would be what to play. Look into Jazz books on piano/bass/drums because it's quite difficult what they play.

i thnk a zippy snare rather than a noisey one layered in or to replace the other one would help this... and you know some rapping

>>74631584
i can't tell if i like this or not lol. needs a fuck load of eq'ing to really see the potential of this track.... sounds way too cluttered in the high end.

>>74631558
oh....

>>74630898
i can only hear drums bruv. just keep working

>>74628989
hey i like this anon. just notch out wherever you're hearing the boxiness with a narrow eq... or rerecord every drum seperately

>>74627666
bass is hella loud on both mate. that's going to eat up limiter headroom like crazy. cool hats though.

>>74625423
>turning an idea i have into a full length track without it getting boring

it's all building and releasing tension and space. for example, where your song ends i can hear the progression shift down and it would instantly create a new harmony/feel to your song.

>>74623206
go ahead and upload if you're done with it if you want?

sounds like there should be some deep voiced dude rapping monotone over this. dope sound design man, i just wish there was something to grab on to.

>>74635319
I really like the melody and the synth you just have to drive part of it in a certain direction but it sounds good just looping
>>
Halp me, bedroom folkfag here. I don't have a recording space or any money I just have a shite handheld mic. Is there a feature in a DAW that can minimize background / air conditioner noise?
>>
How can I make the Bass come through a little harder on this? I like the kick but I feel like the actual bass hit is a little weak

>>74636216
>I just have a shite handheld mic
usb mic huh? if so then no. just make sure it's facing the other way and place a gate with a low threshold and play as loud as you can to fight the noise floor. that only might work.........

Not gonna lie I'm surprised at how much this worked. Thanks!

I'm sick and tired of working on this song. Been at it for two weeks and it has changed drastically since I started it. It's not even the same song anymore. But for future reference, how would any of you versed in mixing and mastering improve this track? I'll ptobsbly go back to it eventually... the songs I'm making, I'll be selling commercially eventually as a soundtrack to something else I'm doing so I'd like to get the bset possible sound I can get in my room...

I worked on FL Studio 11 and used the stock multiband compressor to compress certain things, and bring up others. I think I even messed around with Maximus, tweaking things until I felt it sounded alright.

Are there any production resources for stuff that falls in that techno/dub/ambient area? Everything dance related seems oriented towards mainstream shovelware type shit.

i mean pretty much all of the knowledge behind those techniques can be applied anywere.

the tracks you linked aren't particularly complicated. i only dabble in making stuff like this and 90% of it is just being really specific with your reverb/eq to get things into the background and place things in the appropriate space (though that can be said for mixing anything in general i guess.)

just take off some of the attack on your kicks, set up a longer reverb for specific drum hits apart from your main sends on the rest of you tracks, highpass and shelf out a lot more than you normally would for other genres.

thanks for introducing some new techno to me man

>>74637451
not listening on monitors rn but it sounds like you used panning for separating the leads in place of getting everything to mesh. They're too loud and need some good cuts. Go back to this and tweak it in mono and i think it should be really obvious what you need to fix.
>>
>>74638270
>highpass and shelf out

just noticed this but i meant shelf out more of the highs if that didn't make sense right away
>>
>>74637920
what do you think is in that bottle?

The other day I was watching some masterclass where the dude explains how to record/mix live drums.
Am I missing something or is using a drum machine et samples way easier to deal with?

>>74621137
how did you get tinnitus?
>>
>>74638766
>is using a drum machine et samples way easier to deal with?

yeah no shit

there are infinitely more problems and techniques to mic'ing up a drum set. Nothing comes pre-sounding good like samples do
>>

>>74638270
BBy good cuts you mean reduction in volume? Is that it?

What else wrong do you here with my mix?

I'm listening to it in mono right now and yeah the saw synth sound and the high pitched sound do seem louder. My issue when I was mixing it earlier was the high pitched sound sounded too loud no matter what, and if I lowered it too much it sounded too low.

I guess I'll be spending my day off working on this track.... again...

:(

It's been great for experience though...
>>
/prod/, how simple is too simple for a beat? If the rap over it is really technical, is it alright to have a more simplistic beat? I'm trying to study this, but while I'm doing some reading, if you happen to have any good examples of over- or under-produced beats, let me know. Thanks in advance.
>>
>>74639068
yes it's okay............

>>74639029
>reduction in volume
yes. "subtractive eq"

high frequencies don't need a lot of volume to hear. if they sound too loud "no matter what" cut something. those leads sounded like they'd be clashing anyway

This is my first time actually trying to make something all feedback is welcome

That's why drum replacing is so common.
>>
>>74639219
I really like the reverb on the pads, that sounds great. The bass fuzz is really nice, but personally I'd start mixing up where it hits after the first time it cuts off. I'm not huge into that sound though, so I may not be the best to ask.
>>
>>74639250
I did mix it up should I try making it a little more noticeable?

cool idea but like the other poster said you should look into EQ'ing and sound design, you could clear up the frequencies and still have the exact same ideas /instrumentation

I meant throwing in multiple notes in each hit, you could even just go for scales and it'd probably switch things up.

I think I would need to change up the whole thing I honestly just spent like 2 hours on it tonight and thats it add some triplets and shit maybe some syncopation if im feeling really spicy
>>
>>74639492
Sure man, I dont mind the beat but its just a bit too blocky for my tastes. Doesnt mean its bad, just means its different. Maybe something you could do is use the notes from the first bit, but find a progression in them. I feel like that'd make it smoother.
>>
>>74639534
Note taken thanks

>>74633295
I hear those samples all the time in future funk stuff. Not too bad, though.

The drums are kind of pushed back into the mix. I think you should emphasize the percussion a bit more to give this track some more energy. Like, the hihats are pretty sparse. You're doing the thing where you hit them in a really tight succession (I can't remember the name for it). But when that's not going on, most of the time, they're largely hitting on the down beats rather than on your up beats as well. That's not the only thing, though. Like, the drums otherwise, the bassy woogs, and samples happen on downbeats. It really puts a strong focus on how rigid and basic the pattern is. Filling stuff in between with more than just the melody would help out a lot.

Just my two cents. Keep making music
>>
>>74639609
To add to this, if you like the slower pace at times, you could even alternate them. It'd give it a nice contrast between the two speeds
