Like for a lot of people Devil and God was the soundtrack of my life when i was a depressed kid in high school, but my tastes have since become refined and i moved on from this type of music and the likes of Thrice and Circa Survive (which was basically the trifecta of """good""" mediocre bands at that time)

Meanwhile Brand New still haven't really evolved.
In spite of citing bands like The Smiths and Modest Mouse as some of their biggest inspirations. At least Jesse Lacey's voice has a comforting timbre. I still don't like Daisy btw. except for Sleep.

Who loves this? Who are you? What are your other favourite bands, albums, films? I just don't get it. How can a band this alright, this okay, this tame, cause so much emotion, so much hype, so much attention. Have you not been listening to music for long? Are you still a teen? Is it purely nostalgia? This is not ambitious, nor it is any more heartfelt than their previous albums. It's okay, it's just SO okay.

Look, I really liked Deja Entendu as a teen for its undeniable mid 2000s emo aesthetic + catchy hooks (none of which are to be found here, by the way - which could be okay, but leaves the band with nothing interesting to work with), but getting so wet, so fucking wet, over something that is in no universe better than "good", is pure insanity. The slave-like adoration fans have for this band puzzles me to no end. I mean, listen to "451" at the annoying 01:00 mark - "woooow FUCK yeah, TIME TO ROCK!!!!!!", like derivative "bombastic epic indie music" from some brand advertisement on TV. Or listen to the song with the part that goes something like "YOU'RE SO PRETTY BUT GADAMN YOURE SO UGLY", with that obnoxious, autistic Isaac Brock-like scream, reciting those dumb fucking lyrics, which fans eat it up because "rawwww he's screaming ;;;;;;; SO relatable!!!"...

I am confused how this band is about to get away with being so ridiculously formulaic when everyone from Swans to Kendrick was called out for it. This does nothing new nor interesting. It even employs the same things bands like Beatles, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Bowie, etc. have been doing for years to give their works a sense of faux sophistication. What's even worse is that the band takes a much simpler approach to doing that than the previously mentioned, highly lauded artists as well, pulling out any aspect of creativity from that style. The band's standout aspect is supposed to be the lyrics, but at the same time lyrics aren't really that important as aspect of music. There has also been mention of the band's ability to create atmosphere, but do we really need another damn alternative/indie rock album that does the same exact approach to melancholic, laid back that so many of its predecessors have done?

your favorite weapon was made when pop punk wasn't really "pop punk" like we know it today. its kind of hard to judge (15?) years later. It was a different time back then. and deja was a groundbreaking album for emo when it came out. Its easy to look back on these albums and judge them now but they really were landmarks in the early 2000's as far as emo goes. I think the problem is a lot of people only started to pay attention to brand new when the devil and god came out. If you grew up watching their progression it makes their discography a lot more enjoyable.

It basically sounds like an entire album made up of songs like Jesus Christ or You Stole
The louder/more straightforward tracks are some of the best they've ever done, the slower ones are really hit-or-miss. Kept expecting In The Water to climax like Limousine but it just kinda repeats itself for a while before shifting into a spooky radio sample
It's been a few years since I was into Brand New though so I wasn't expecting to get anything out of it at all. Doubt it'll be AOTY but I'm still pleasantly surprised

When it's is at its peak I'm totally convinced that this is AOTY and maybe their best work. But when it's in a slump it could almost be their worst. I'm definitely gonna keep listening to it if nothing else.
