lots of bm is and was innovative anyway
the biggest of the norwegian bands (burzum, mayhem, darkthrone, immortal, emperor) all had their completely unique sound
even gorgoroth who by today's standards play the closest to "by the book" bm were pretty much trendsetters with their first 2 LP masterpieces

and it didn't stop there of course
black metal is the only genre where in its most bare-bones form it is potent and wholesome and yet allows for a lot of different sounds to emerge
as long as you real and true to its spirit

deafheaven and alcest and all the other bands like them are not just shit because they are not "true black metal", they are shit because they make shit music, and they are not black metal because they are not true to the spirit, not just because their music is shitty and different
