Can someone teach me how to determine time signatures in music?

listen to sousa marches and chopin waltzes and try to find the difference

1. Tap along with it until you find the right speed where your tapping stays in sync with the music
2. Count how many taps it takes until the rhythmic pattern repeats again

1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 = 4/4
1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2 3= 3/4
1 2 3 4 1 2 3 = 7/8

Just remember that multiples are equivalent, e.g. 3/4 is the same of 6/8, 4/4 is the same of 2/2. And don't let ANYONE tell you otherwise.

Question for compound time: if I have a riff that goes 1 2 3 4 5 / 1 2 3 4 5 6 / 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 / 1 2 3 4 5, is it correct notation if I write that as 23/8 or as 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, 5/8?

Cos I really can't be bothered having to write a time signature change every bar
