What went wrong?

It wasn't that bad. I listen to it in the context of a Frank Black solo album though. I feel like people would be more receptive of it if it released as such instead of messing with the Pixies canon.
classical composers continued making great music beyond their middle ages
rock/pop musicians are done by 35
it's cause classical composers were musically educated and knew exactly what they were doing, and they learned more and more as they continued to create
whereas rock/pop musicians usually are just creatively talented but have no idea what they're doing, so as soon as they run out of initial ideas
it's especially obvious when you see how the less technically proficient musicians make like 1 or 2 albums then fizzle out super fast, punk rock and hip-hop are infamous for this, whereas stuff that requires more musicianship and knowledge of theory like proggy stuff, jazz, or metal can have like 10 more good albums for a single band
but they're never as prolific as classical composers were

Frank even admits it in an interview, 8:41, though acknowledges based Lovering.

I thought most of the songs were good, but the production was bland and not what they seemed to be going for. I mean let the bass shine through for fuck's sake. I like Frank's deep, gravelly voice these days, but it doesn't work with a polished sound, i.e. Baal's Back.
