The Real Thing was released in 89' and was a solid Funk Metal album.

Mr. Bungle's s/t came out in 91 and was trash, but I don't think it spilled over into FNM. If anything it was Mike's creative outlet during that time period.

For what its worth, California is a solid avant pop album.
