actually, not in 1978. there weren't really any "indie record stores" in terms of an identity - there weren't that many chains, actually, and most record stores were "indie".

But even chains had a variety of material. I bought "Cookiepuss" on 12" at Strawberry's in 1983, for instance.

People read Rolling Stone, Creem and their local alternative paper to find out about records.

For sure certain stores in big cities or college towns would have more imports and local music releases, but it wasn't as segmented as now.

There were also amazing black record stores, full of funk, soul and R&B, which don't really exist any more.
