I agree that Fountain is their best song but I still think Queen is their best album. S/t has some skippable tracks like Miserable Lie and Hand in Glove while Queen is pretty much flawless from start to finish.

S/T has some great songs but I think the production really holds the project back. My favorite smiths related thing is Hatful simply because of the production and how it made their first songs so much better.

Idk what it is, it just sounds full of itself. The lyrics aren't as impassioned as the s/t for me, the music is boring. I've always preferred a raw sound over high production value. I think Johnny Marr is overrated as a guitarist/songwriter. Musically the only interesting albums to me are MiM and s/t. Not that they're overrated imo.

I think in s/t Marr reached almost the apex of jangle guitar songwriting in a few tracks. what's amazing is he and Peter Buck were doing it at the same time independently of each other
